This volume tells the story of the daylight air battles over Germany through the eyes of the Bf 109 aces involved. It traces the development of the aerial defence of the Reich from its small beginnings to arguably the most savage and costliest campaign in the history of aerial warfare. The Luftwaffe pilots explain their tactics and relate their experiences - in the early days, waiting for short-ranged Allied fighters to turn back before attacking the bombers, the see-saw battle for aerial supremacy that followed, the advent of the P-51 and its devastating effect, the growing might of the heavy bomber streams and the final desperate measures against overwhelming odds. The story is predominantly that of the Bf 109's struggle to defeat the US Eighth Air Force, although latterly both the 'mediums' of the US Ninth Air Force and the 'heavies' of RAF Bomber Command were also active by day over Germany.

The ad and title for this book implied personal accounts from Germman WWII aces. It is not close to offering you this type of literature. The author briefly introduces each year starting with 1942 as intro paragraphs; each paragraph regarding the airwar and background is no more than one paragraph in length taking less than 100 words to describe the background. Then he lists each fighter group, listing each bomber mission, the gives a statiscal account of the number of bombers lost by the USAAf, citing the number of these shot down by German pilots, he devotes almost 99% of the text in this manner. I don't recall more than four or five personal accounts and each of these less than 7-8 lines. He says very little about the defense provided by P-47's and P-51's. In this regard little is related regarding interaction between these fighters and the German pilots. He introduces these to planes, P-47's and P-51's, in the last 30 or so pages of his statistical reporting. The last 40 plus pages are used to repeat the listings of german pilots records. If you are looking for personal accounts of German pilots you will be disappointed. This book is no more than a posting of statistical numbers. Almost zero material is devoted to personal pilot accounts.
