Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
This book brings together reprinted editions of Blume's companion novels Just as Long as We're Together (1987) and Here's to You, Rachel Robinson (1993). In the first novel, Stephanie's friendship with Rachel grows into an threesome with new girl Alison, adopted from Vietnam, and Stephanie deals with the painful news of her parents' separation; in the second, Rachel is struggling with her own academic precociousness and perfectionism as her family faces the return after his expulsion from boarding school of her angry and abusive older brother. Blume remains the master of creating extremely real tween characters and recording the minutia of their day-to-day lives: how they decorate their rooms, how they cover their notebooks, how dark they like their toast, how they like to sign their names (with or without a middle initial). Compared with more recent YA fiction, the action here feels very slow—we are well over a hundred pages into Just as Long as We're Together before any real conflict begins to develop. But this same leisurely pacing contributes to the sense that we are being given a generous slice of real girls' actual lives. Here's to You, Rachel Robinson is the less successful of the two because the three-way friendship that made the first book so satisfying is eclipsed by Rachel's family problems and dominated by her truly unpleasant brother Charles. Still, here as well, Blume excels at showing her characters' small and believable moments of growth, as Rachel comes to realize that "life is full of surprises, and they're not necessarily all bad."

This was a great book, its about true friendship. Although it was great there were some mildly inapproriate parts. In just as long as were together they talk about sex, periods, and breasts but very mildly. In just as long as were together they swear using word like the f word, b word, and d word.

There are not enough words of praise in any language, in all of the languages, to sing of Judy Blume. She captures the spirit of that turbulent time between childhood and adulthood with the appropriate amounts of humor and understanding. Never one to make fun of the struggles every teenager experiences, no matter how frivolous they may be, Blume is in touch with her inner adolescent. She will always be one of my personal favorites.
