Overview

The Bhagavad Gita: one of three new editions of the books in Eknath Easwaran's Classics of Indian Spirituality series ''On this path, effort never goes to waste, and there is no failure. Even a little effort towards spiritual awareness will protect you from the greatest fear.'' - Bhagavad Gita (2:40) The Bhagavad Gita, the ''Song of the Lord,'' is India's best-known scripture. For Easwaran, it was a personal guidebook, as it was for Mahatma Gandhi. The Bhagavad Gita opens, dramatically, on a battlefield. Prince Arjuna is on the brink of an apocalyptic war that he doesn't want to fight - and he turns in anguish to his spiritual guide, Sri Krishna, for answers to the fundamental questions of life. Arjuna's struggle is profoundly modern. Easwaran's genius is to show us that ''the battlefield is a perfect backdrop, but the Gita's subject is the war within, the struggle for self-mastery that every human being must wage.'' And Sri Krishna's sublime instruction, on living and dying, working and loving, on the nature of the soul, is as relevant to readers today as it was at the dawn of Indian history.

    Best Translation

Easwaran presents the Gita with some of the Sanskrit words intact in the text. He gives the multiple meanings of the words in the intro to each chapter. This metaphorical book is a wonderful meditation on the battles we face within, as well as a thought-provoking description of our relationship to God as we define the Creator.

    Inspiring and symbolic

In studying Eastern philosophy, this book is an interesting departure from the teachings of Lao-Tzu and Siddhartha Guatama. I'm an atheist and even I found the Gita very inspiring and a fascinating philosophical study. It's short and precise in its message so one doesn't get bored. I strongly reccomend this book to anyone interested in religion. It's a safe bet to say that even a staunch Christian might get some useful thought out of the Gita.

    Excellent read

This book is certainly one of the best I have ever read. It is easy to follow because at the begining if each chapter, the author, offers a brief summary of what each respected chapter is about as well as background in Hindu terminology and history. There is no need to have any background on Hinduism in order to read this version of the Gita but I would recommend reading Huston Smith's ' The World's Religions' (in case one may want some background not only in Hinduism but as well as in tne other main religions) although it is not necessary. I know, after reading the Gita, that I will comr back to it not only because it offers valuable information as a religious text but also because of its poetic nature. Compared to other religious' texts, the Gita is approachable and valiaable as a great piece of literature. I am confident that no readder will be disappointed. Enjoy.

    I Also Recommend:

    Amazing text

One great fallacy of people studying Hinduism is that this is the main source of scripture. So not true. It's part of the Mahabharata epic, only a small part of it. Nevertheless it seems to be the most well-known and accesible in the US. Which is fine, because it is a great read! The source of the great fallacy mentioned above is because a lot of Hindu philosophy is talked about, from Krishna to Arjuna. On the battle field Krishna explains what a warrior and a prince are, then goes on with more general philosophies. Anyway, any student of religion should read this, though I'd advise that one read a book on Hinduism before diving into this work.

    A reviewer

For those who have only a very basic knowledge of Hinduism, this book was an amazing start. The introduction was amazingly helpful: the explanations of difficult religious ideas were superb. This introduction was particularly helpful to me because it related Hindu beliefs to those of Christianity. The mini-introductions at the beginning of each chapter also helped so that I knew the basic plot before facing the scripture head-on. I found this to be an easy read, and it also most likely would be equally enthralling for those who are curious and inspired to read this fine work. [One of my best friends is Hindu, so reading this gave me a lot more perspective as to how she perceives the world]. Truly worth it. I loved this edition!

this book is very relevant to everyday life. i highly recommend it especially to avid hindus seeking to learn more of their culture. we use this book for our sunday school discussions and it helps us understand our religion as well simplifies the religion. it is not exclusively hindu either, anyone can understand it; the names and terms are all defined in th glossary at the back.

    Great translation - required reading!

This is an excellent translation and each chapter has an introduction explaining and/or introducing the text, such that it becomes much more meaningul for someone unfamiliar with the historical and cultural background of the Gita. This should be required reading - I also recommend Man's Search for Meaning. This book is so important to me I have the hardcopy and I got it for my Nook so I can always have it with me. I also got it for my sister and she felt the same way about it.

Now I Know Why Hitler chose the Swastika

I must confess to my Comp. Lit. professor that I didn't do all of my assigned reading, right away that is. When I did get around to reading the Gita, I began to understand my own culture, as well as the motivation behind the Nazi Party's use of the Swastika as their Party symbol. The Gita gives a complicated yet complete explanation of reincarnation, and how eating certain animals before conception can lead to the reincarnation of the sole trapped in said dinner. The Gita also helps with anger management, by teaching that one should reflect seriously on the issue before expressing one's anger. I don't know what the Hades all you hippies are talking about.
