Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jeanne K. Pettenati
The author has selected 26 Bible characters, A to Z, and written a verse about each one. Although the book demonstrates creativity and knowledge of the Bible, it is not age appropriate. Children who are learning their ABC's are too young to hear that F is for the "Foolish Virgins" and W is for the "Wise Virgins." The illustration for J, which is for Jesus, shows Christ and the two thieves crucified on Calvary. One entry mentions leprosy and there is an illustration of the stigmata on Jesus' hand for the entry about Thomas, "who doubted a lot." Introducing kids to the Bible is a great idea if it is done sensitively. This book depicts some disturbing scenes that may trigger negative reactions, and is more likely to confuse and scare children, rather than teach them the alphabet or teach them about the Bible.
