Overview

Ninety percent of Americans own a copy of the Bible, and while it’s the most widely read book, it’s also the least understood. Regardless of your religion, understanding the Bible brings much of Western art, literature, and public discourse into greater focus—from Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper” painting to the Wachowski brothers’ The Matrix movies. People have historically turned to religion to deal with tragedy and change, and with the right insight, the Bible can be an accessible, helpful guide to life’s big questions.

The Bible For Dummies appeals to people of all faiths, as well as those who don’t practice any particular religion, by providing interfaith coverage of the entire Bible and the often fascinating background information that makes the Bible come alive. You’ll find answers to such questions as:

  • Where did the Bible come from?
  • Who wrote the Bible?
  • How is the Bible put together?

Follow the history of the Bible from its beginning thousands of years ago as tattered scrolls to its status as the bestseller of all time. The Bible For Dummies covers these topics and more:

  • Ten people in the Bible you should know
  • The Hebrew Bible
  • The Apocrypha’s hidden treasures
  • What’s new about the New Testament
  • Israel’s wisdom, literature, and love poetry
  • The Bible’s enduring influence
  • The prophets: more than fortunetellers

Whether you’re interested in broadening your spiritual horizons, uncovering the symbolism of Western culture, or gaining a deeper understanding of the book you grew up reading, The Bible For Dummies has all the information you need to navigate this ancient and fascinating book.

This book provides a clear and in depth look at the stories in the bible with easy to understand explinations. I definately recomend it, expecially if you have to read the bible for a summer assignment as I did. Its not to long and answers many questions which people ask that come up as you read.

I pick up the book and read from it all over the place I don't start with page one I go to the book of the Bible that I want to learn more about! Like it was easier to read about Easter then going through the actual Bible and reading Matthew Mark Luke and John! and the print was Large enough too!

For a variety of reasons, it is on my bucket list to do a complete reading of the Bible. I have read about half of it at various points in my life, but the task of reading the other half has always been somewhat daunting. Not being a biblical scholar or historian by any strtetch of the imagination, I feel lost and in need of a basic contextual guide to help me help me understand the who, what, where, why, when, and how of some of the more obscure books, particularly in the Old Testament. For me, this Dummies book seems just about right for brief introductions to the books of the Bible. I find it helpful.

There is a statement listed on page 150 of this book that is wrong. It asks, Who Really Killed Goliath? It states, according to 2 Samuel 21:19, a man named Elhanan also killed Goliath. The scripture says Elhanan killed the brother of Goliath of Gath. Why would the author(s) make such a statement if the Word says different.
