Overview

The Bible Makes Sense is a unique how-to book about the Bible. Brueggemann proposes that Christians should approach the Bible not as a collection of ancient documents, but as our partner in an ongoing dialogue about our life here and now. This book explains how to enter into this dialogue, how to listen, and how to respond. More than simply introducing you to major themes, Brueggemann reveals an engaging biblical understanding of the world that leads to a life of joy, wholeness, and peace. Suggestions for reflection, discussion, and meditation on particular passages provide outlines for group study and for your own prayerful Bible reading.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“This is a splendid little book. I set myself to reading it as a chore . . . and ended up being delighted and challenged and astonished, all at the same time.” — Michael Warren, the Religious Education Association

“Brueggemann is a prophet in his own right, and thus quite well equipped to make sense out of the Bible.” —Richard Rohr

Walter Bruegggemann is argubly one of the planet's most knowledgeable Old Testament scholars and spirit-immersed teachers. I find his writing invariably thought-provoking but exceedingly dense, with a vocabulary and grammar that are daunting. I partake in small bites. This this little book is his attempt to write for the wider audience and "Make Sense of the Bible". His common thread is God's passion for justice. The book has enjoyed wide and enduring readership as it has been published by Westminster as a Revised Edition with new introduction by WB. Regrettably, this current Franciscan Media reprint lacks his splendid introduction, which lowers my rating to 4-star.
