The stories and characters featured in "The Boxcar Children" series are from another time. These books are from a time when children were allowed to travel on bicycles for multiple days without checking in with an adult. They are from a time when children offered to help random strangers clean up their houses after overhearing that the adults are overwhelmed. "The Boxcar Children" are from a time which may never have existed at all. In this adaptation of Gertrude Chandler Warner's original story, the Aldens travel from their grandfather's home to their Aunt Jane's on their bicycles. Along the way, they do several good deeds, stay the night in an abandoned house (the girls stay in a separate space from the boys), and reunite a lost dog with its owner. The illustrations modernize the Aldens' context—all the children wear helmets while riding their bikes and the clothing is relatively modern in style. This jars slightly with the old-fashioned feel of the tale—cell phones never come up, and there is not only a General Store on the children's route, but also a fruit stand. The children stop twice for the night during their journey to their Aunt's house (overnight stays don't come up at all on the way back)—once in an abandoned building, and once getting a motel room without a reservation. The jarring disparity of these elements highlights the lack of realism in this story. Perhaps a time long ago, and in prose, these adventures were close enough to life to be believable. But when visualized, the context of the Alden family seems further from truth than wizards and fairies. Combine this unbelievability with wooden storytelling and stilted dialogue, and the reader will find themselves wishing they had read the book in its original form.
