Overview

A stunningly illustrated look at a strikingly diverse tradition, Biedermeier to Bauhaus is the only book available—in English or German—on its subject. From the Renaissance to the early 20th century, curator Sigrid Sangl traces the complex but characteristic interior design styles found throughout Germany, literally opening the doors to a variety of exceptional interiors.

Most of the featured residences—townhouses, royal palaces, artists' studios, and rural retreats—have never before been photographed. Barbara and René Stoeltie's sumptuous full-color images, many specially commissioned for this book, convey both the grand scale and the distinguishing details of each style: 16th-century wood-paneled parlors with furniture in matching inlaid patterns; elaborate Baroque wall paintings inspired by exotic plant forms; sturdy, stalwart Biedermeier tables and chairs; the sinuous, ornamental curves of Jugendstil; and the simple, streamlined functionalism of the Bauhaus. Reaching from the Baltic to the Alps, Biedermeier to Bauhaus includes maps and a list of places to visit.

Author Biography: Sigrid Sangl has been head of the Furniture and Woodwork Department of the Bavarian National Museum since 1992. One of the best-known furniture experts in Germany, she has held positions in a number of different museums. The author of two books on royal German interiors, she has lectured and published articles on a wide range of art- and antiques-related subjects.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
This comprehensive overview of German interior design begins with the influence of the Renaissaince on German interiors in the 16th century and follows the various schools and movements through the stylized Bauhaus designs of the post-World War I era. Author Sigrid Sangl, an authority on German furniture and interiors, examines the societal influences that shaped each period of German design in the excellent text. Nearly 300 full-color photographs capture the evolution of the interiors, beautifully rendering the rich inlaid wooden floors, painted ceilings, colorful marble, and polished brass of the featured houses.
Library Journal
The terms Biedermeier, which refers to the late 18th-century German interpretation of neoclassicism, and Bauhaus, which refers to the ultramodern design of post-World War I, are frequently mentioned in interior design books, but otherwise the German decorative arts are overlooked or only briefly covered. Sangl, a German furniture expert and head of the Furniture and Woodwork Department of the Bavarian National Museum, provides an overview of German interior and furniture design from the early 16th to the early 20th century with descriptions of the historical, cultural, and sociological influences that shaped the development of decorative style. Contemporary color photographs depict existing examples that exemplify each style as found in German castles, palaces, and country homes, such as Sanssouci in Potsdam and the Schloss Faber-Castell near Nuremberg. A concluding chapter covers the German folk or rural tradition in the home. Highly recommended for college, professional, and large interior design collections.
