Overview

M is for las muralistas, making murals of island vistas. Waterfalls that hide brick walls. Rainforest full of tropical trees.

N is for the noisy neighbors who sit on the stoop and catch the breeze.

When Ceci's friend Chien visits her in the Barrio, she takes him on a tour of all of her favorite things about the neighborhood. From fire hydrants to ice cream trucks, bodegas to vacant lots, the sights and sounds of the Barrio -- even the less perfect things -- come to life in the poetic words of Pulitzer Prize finalist Quiara Hudes.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mandy Cruz
This book begins with Abuela and an Abandoned car; images that one may not expect to see in an alphabet book. But they are part of the world in which many children live. From graffiti to broken bottles the journey through the A-Z of images of everyday life is both disheartening and enlightening. Barrio children do not necessarily see a rundown ghetto strewn with litter dangerous to their health; they see little stars that once held a soft drink. They see art and other children playing and ice cream. What the adult reader may find disconcerting the child can find exciting. This "realistic" alphabet book is a good way to get kids to think about the things they see every day and encourage them to build their alphabetical skills. Reviewer: Mandy Cruz
