Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-- Tucked in between apple-green endpapers lie four delightful English town-and-countryside episodes starring, once again, Alfie and his little sister, their parents, grandparents, and a stuffed animal or two. These stories deal with a ``shop'' Alfie constructs from a cardboard box and treasures found in his yard; a camping trip where Alfie and his father encounter a creature with ``a big pink nose'' and ``very large wet nostrils''; a stray sheep that prefers not to be rescued; and a beloved rock named Bonting that's lost on a trip to the seaside. Each page is graced with at least one full-color illustration depicting the impish Alfie and his somewhat scruffy but always warm and caring family. The gentle humor and the well-drawn plots make this book a perfect read-aloud, either for groups or in cozier situations. There are also three nature poems for the child who demands ``Just one more.'' You'll want to order more than one copy of this; it's a treasure. --Eve Larkin, Middleton Public Library, WI
Sheilamae O'Hara
Four-year-old Alfie, last seen in "The Big Alfie and Annie Rose Storybook" , belongs to a nuclear family complete with two parents, a younger sister, and a grandmother. The four stories in this book are tales of a box turned into a store by Alfie and Annie Rose; a night spent in a tent with Dad; encountering a lost sheep with Grandma; and the loss of a cherished rock named Bonting. Interspersed with the stories are poems celebrating the wonder of a fallen tree, the moon, creepy-crawly things, and the sea. Alfie finds fascination in small things, and he shares them with adults who nurture his interests and join his quests. The marvelous watercolors are sometimes panoramic views of a seashore or an English countryside, sometimes close-ups of reflective children. In these gentle stories, Hughes celebrates the wonders of the commonplace. The scale of the illustrations makes this a fine choice for group reading, but the intimate stories are also perfect for two people to share while cuddled close together.
From the Publisher
"As always, Hughes's understanding of childhood's concerns is deep, mellow, and beautifully extended in her exquisite art."  —Kirkus Reviews

"Each page is graced with at least one full-color illustration depicting the impish Alfie and his somewhat scruffy but always warm and caring family . . . You'll want to order more than one copy of this; it's a treasure."  —School Library Journal

We love Alfie! We love Shirley Hughes

The first time someone gave me an Alfie book, they opened a world to me that was just filled with magic and love that I could dive into and share with my kids. Shirley Hughes is a genius, and any of the Alfie stories would be wonderful gifts. Just right for kids under six. Fantastic for lap reading with your two year old or three year old. Timeless, wonderful, full of fun for kids and adults. Much less grating than what so many other books offer to kids, this is one the parents will reach for as often as the kids.
