The suspense mounts as Ellie climbs up, gets nervous, can't look down and then jumps . . . right into the glass of water.

Through the clever use of gatefold flaps, the reader will learn that what seemed big (Ellie) is really little, and what seemed little (our mouse host) is really big.

This simple story can be used on many levels - as a novelty book, as an early reader, and as a literacy tool for those who cannot read English, since the story tells itself through John Stadler's wonderful expressive illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz
We are welcomed to a really BIG show, and introduced to "the amazing Ellie." Each right-hand page unfolds to reveal Ellie the elephant in action as our mouse master-of-ceremonies prepares a glass of water, and Ellie climbs a ladder to a diving board and prepares to jump in. "I can't watch!" notes our mouse. "Neither can I," says our quaking Ellie inside the fold. Down she comes inside a series of the fold-outs as we hold our breath. The ending is not only a big surprise but also a sharp comment on our notions of "big" and "little." We are focused on the two characters, drawn with outlined simplicity with no background settings. The mouse, handsomely dressed in a blue suit and red cummerbund, emotionally announces the action. Ellie's facial expressions clearly communicate her emotions: fear, surprise, success, and delight. With a minimum of text, the sequence of flaps gets the reader into the action and the final fun.

    Fantastic

My two year old LOVES this book. He can recite each page from memory and his animated expressions are a joy to watch. We've given this book to many other children! You can't go wrong.
