Maybe he's not so bad after all! In fact, at the end of the book, we see the wolf as a lovable daddy, showering his pups with hugs and kisses.

This suspenseful story enables children to face their fears and conquer them again and again. Die-cut pages and richly colored acrylic paintings with humorous details make this tale a visual feast!

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A pair of tales show storybook characters in a new light. Big Bad Wolf by Claire Masurel, illus. by Melissa Iwai, dispels an age-old myth. "Although they had never met him, people said... `Big Bad Wolf has pointy ears and shiny eyes!' " Opposite, a die-cut hole shows these features but a turn of the page provides the bigger picture.
Children's Literature
This book is about a big bad wolf who looks like a bear, of whom the village people tell stories about his sharp teeth, pointy ears and shiny eyes. Whenever things are strange or worrisome, they blame the big bad wolf that looks like a bear. Throughout the pages there are holes through which eyes, teeth, ears and even a bushy tail can be seen. Back in his own house, the wolf, who looks like a bear, eats dinner with his family, tells after-dinner stories, plays outside with his little wolves that also look like bears. And, when they won't come inside for bed, he tells them the big bad wolf is coming and they rush inside. Then the big bad wolf kisses them all soundly and tells them good night! These wolves do look very much like bears. 2002, Scholastic,

The Big Bad Wolf is not who you think

This lovely book looks at that old baddie--The Big Bad Wolf--with fresh eyes. Through the use of charmingly placed cutouts, all the myths that people believe about the wolf prove untrue. In fact, the wolf even likes to tease his own kids by playing Big Bad Wolf with them. My first grader loves this book, and his class recently named it as the book they'd most like to recommend to other children. As a parent, I love it because it has the requisite humor and intelligence to bear frequent re-reading!

    Don't be afraid

Wolves have always been given a bad reputation from Grimm's fairy tales to Disney, they're always portrayed as evil. This lovely book gives children the opportunity to think "outside the book"; animals/people are not always what they seem and even the scariest animals have loving families. The cut out eyes are fun to follow from page to page. Cheers Ms. Masurel

Don't Judge a Book by its Cover

Big Bad Wolf has a wonderful cover that compels you to open it, but little do you know what you'll find inside! With the help of charming illustrations and enchanting peep-holes, Claire Masurel's touching story leads you into the very lair of the wolf. Be brave! Children and parents alike will love this little book that has lots to say.
