Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathy Leggett
This title is one of a series of "Brand New Reader" books created by the folks at Sesame Workshop. A nonprofit educational group, Sesame Workshop supports the Sesame Street television production. This series is made up of books that encourage children to read by themselves and be successful the first time, as they interact with characters they already know and love. Sesame Workshop has chosen everyday topics that young readers can relate to. Big Bird and his friends Abby, the Count, Grover and Oscar are featured in four short little stories that focus on things that can be done at home. Big Bird and Abby clean the house. Abby puts away the books while Big Bird folds his blanket. The Count and Big Bird share a snack. Big Bird puts out the plates. The Count brings flowers. Big Bird draws pictures with Oscar. Big Bird is drawing flowers while Oscar adds rain and trash. Grover and Big Bird move parts of their body; Big Bird waves his wings while Grover kicks his legs. A five to six word sentence accompanies each picture which in turn gives the early reader clues as to what the text will say. A clever way to help children to be successful the very first time they pick up a book. An introduction for parents offers ideas on how to read the book with a child, how to guide and praise the reader, how to offer suggestions about the possibilities and how to expand the experience by using the text as a jumping off point to a new activity.
