Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Mr. Salami announces that they will study all of the winter holidays¾Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa¾in class. Big Gloria and Big Bob ask to write the class play. But Big Gloria doesn't like Santa Claus because he is too scary. Instead, she writes about Potato Claus, who rings the doorbell and lets children select gifts from a big book without getting personal about whether they have been good or not. Of course Mr. Salami plays Potato Claus, and leaves all of the children with bags of potato chips at the end of the play. Not quite as clever as the first time Mr. Salami dressed up as a potato and his identity was a secret. A level 3 book in the "Hello Reader" series. 1999, Cartwheel/Scholastic, $3.99. Ages 4 to 8.
