Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
This large 12" by 9?" book is best examined on a large table or even on the floor, because it contains four giant fold-outs, measuring 37" by 12" which even the largest of us cannot comfortably fit onto our laps. It opens to a pirate ship sailing across the first two pages. There are turtles and fish in the water, red and white birds flying in the sky, and the black and white skull and crossed bones flying at the stern. On this page, as on all of the pages, everything is identified by name: Capstan, wheel for hauling in the anchor; Third mast, called the mizzen mast; bowsprit; and Captain Blackbeard standing on the Poop deck at the back of the ship. The next double-page spread is titled, "ships through history," and illustrates thirteen ships beginning with an Egyptian sailing ship from 4,500 years ago to a modern "Ocean liner" of eighty years ago. Beneath those two pages, when they are opened outward is the ocean liner Queen Mary from 1938 across a four-page spread. Four other somewhat smaller ships surround her, and all are identified. Next is a double spread, entitled "floating hotels," which are all cruising ships, three of them under sail. There is a four-page spread of working boats, followed by "ships that carry things." There is a double-page spread of "modern warships," opening out to another four-page spread of more naval vessels. The book ends with a double-page of "Biggest and longest ships," labeled and identified. If you know a youngster who loves boats this is a fitting purchase. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
