Overview

A My First Hello Reader book, this humorous rhyming story, with game cards and activity pages, becomes a quick nature study as it follows a delightful bug in his quest for solitude.

"The big bug dug...and dug...and dug. Down in the dirt, the big bug dug..."
As the big bug digs his way down under -- "to find a quiet place to sleep!" -- readers are treated to a short lesson in nature science. We meet underground insects and animals: snakes, slugs, worms, and more. We also discover such things as roots, rocks, and fossils found at different levels below. The book comes with eight pairs of picture-word game cards that can be punched out and used to reinforce the story in a fun way. In addition, there are six pages of skill-building puzzle activities. Whimsical illustrations by Jeffrey Scherer make this book totally engaging for young readers.

Looking for a quiet place to sleep, a big bug digs down past a snake, a slug, a worm, and down even more. Includes punch-out game cards and skill-building activity pages.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Why does the big bug dig? He very industriously goes deeper and deeper in the ground passing by roots, gopher holes, rocks and moles. Our industrious bug doesn't take a break and doesn't seem to need a nap; he just keeps going deeper and deeper. Finally he has a hole and is surrounded by silence—the perfect place for him to sleep. Anthropomorphic creatures fill the pages of this simple short story. To help kids with comprehension and reading skills there are several pages of activities—identifying opposites, a dot-to-dot surprise, a maze, selecting rhyming words, a word find, fill in the blanks and a set of flash cards bound into the book. There is an answer key and also an introductory note to family members with guidelines to help kids become better readers. The inside front and back endpapers list other books in the "Hello Reader" series. A "My First Hello! Reader" with game cards for preschool to grade 1. 2001, Cartwheel/Scholastic,
