Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Readers participate in an insect guessing game in Big Bugs! Giant Creepy Crawly Pop-Ups by Keith Faulkner, illus. by Stephen Holmes, with paper engineering by Jonathon Lambert. "What kind of bug is yellow and black,/ lives in a hive, and has wings on its back?" asks the left hand side of the opening spread; on the right, readers open a gatefold to reveal "a Honeybee" that pops from the pages (with a fact below). A ladybug, cricket and butterfly number among the other answers. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Here is a lift-the-flap book that is ten inches by ten inches with five double-spread pages. The pages on the right sides all open out from the inside to create a thirty-inch wide sheet with a very large bug popping up from the middle of the fold! Each scene shows a page-size picture of a child's face. With the flap closed, the face appears curious, and when it opens the face is amazed and amused by the common garden-variety insect that appears under the flap. The left-side pages ask, what kind of bug lives in a hive, or what kind makes a noise by rubbing its wings together, or what kind is red and black? Under the flap the insect is identified and an interesting, and possibly unknown, fact is provided for each bug. Because the pages are not very thick, this attractive book should probably be displayed in a clear bag or contained with a cellophane band to keep the pop-up bugs from being damaged when handled by little hands. 2003, Scholastic, Ages 3 to 6.
