Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin
David Salariya and Joanne Jessup in this 10- x 12-inch big book show what's beneath the surface of 10 structures built prior to the 17th century and the purposes they served. The first of the two spreads devoted to each recounts its history alongside a cutaway view; the second spread contains a description of its construction and highlights various steps along the way. Among the ten buildings are Bodiam Castle, one of the last medieval castles to be built, and the Basilica of St. Peter, considered by some the finest example of Italian Renaissance architecture. A similar book, Big Buildings of the Modern World looks at structures built in the last two centuries.
Children's Literature - Debra Briatico
This excellent book uses full-color illustrations, magnifications and cutaways, combined with fascinating text to explore some of the ancient world's most amazing architectural innovations including the great pyramids, the Parthenon, the Colosseum, the Taj Mahal, the Basilica of St. Peter, and Notre Dame. The author provides insight into the manpower, craftsmanship, construction techniques, and building materials used to create these remarkable buildings.
School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-Jessop examines 10 ``big'' buildings, devoting two double-page spreads to each. The first spread gives brief historical information and an overview of the structure, while the second one offers more detailed information on construction techniques, materials, and architectural elements. Full-color, cut-away drawings are used frequently, but occasionally are too small to be of much value. The Great Pyramid, the Colosseum, Notre Dame, Mont St. Michel, and the Forbidden City are included, among others. Pages are cluttered with illustrations and text, and details are often repeated. A two-page glossary defines many unfamiliar words, although no pronunciation assistance is provided. The index is detailed but seems unnecessary, since the book will be used mostly for browsing. More buildings, but fewer details, are offered in Philip Wilkinson's Amazing Buildings (Dorling Kindersley, 1993). Purchase Jessop's title only where demand is high.-Jeanette Larson, Texas State Library, Austin
