Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
With the current interest in 3-D, it is no real surprise to find a book with a pair of 3-D glasses to use when reading it. The focus is animals that are members of the cat/feline family. The top predators are tigers, lions, cheetahs, leopards, cougars and jaguars. Each of these big cats is treated to a spread and on those pages readers learn about the way the animal looks, what it eats and where and how it lives by reading the text and looking at the pictures. For example, the cheetah is an animal known for its speed and it cannot roar. Once a cheetah has downed its prey, it has to eat fast because it is no match for the larger cats. One very interesting fact is the lessons that a mother cheetah provides. She may catch an animal and keep it alive so that her offspring can practice and hone their hunting skills. The book segues into an explanation of what a jungle is and the types of creatures who may live in it. Readers also learn about the different animals found in Australian jungles since Australia was cut off from the mainland for so long it has a number of unusual creatures. The text closes with a few words about the endangered jungles and a few more fun facts. There is quite a bit of information packed into this book and you really do not need the glasses to enjoy it. It is also a book that works for struggling older readers as well as those who may be learning English as a second language. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
