Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Cool Mom Picks: “Another standout is BIG, with fabulous collage illustrations by Clare Fennell and a nice story by author Colleen Paratore. It would be an excellent big sibling gift as you can imagine—or even a little sibling book, really. The idea is that ‘big’ isn’t measured in how tall you are, but how bright, healthy, and imaginative you are—‘being the biggest YOU you can be." Cool Mom Picks

""Coleen Paratore's BIG is my cup of tea. A little book that packs a BIG message. A delightful dive into the deeper meaning of what it means to be big."" ~ Peter H. Reynolds, author of Rose's Garden and The Dot

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—"BIG is being the biggest YOU that YOU can be," is Paratore's message. That means being bright, healthy, and imaginative. It also means being kind, helpful, and a valuable member of your community. Produced by a company whose mission is to "cultivate conscious, responsible little people," this book explains how being eco-friendly, an "active citizen," and maintaining healthy habits makes one "BIG," rather than measuring one's physical size or number of possessions. Perhaps the best message is that "BIG happens little by little, one little thought, one little question, one little action…one little day at a time." Former greeting-card designer Fennell supplies jolly collages of active children of various ethnicities. Although the moralizing content is well-meaning, the typeface emphasizes many random words and the general format of the book applies to an audience younger than those who may grasp the concepts.—Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA

Meet the Author

Author Bio
Coleen Paratore, Is a native of Troy, New York, and the eldest of six children. Her lifelong love of reading can be traced back to weekly trips with her mother to the Troy Public Library. Coleen’s fascination with words has taken her from first place in a grammar-school poetry contest to a Master’s Degree in English from Trinity College.

After leaving the workforce in 1994 to become a full-time mother of three, Coleen spent her days introducing her children to the world around them. “I didn’t know that I would one day write children’s books, yet everything in my life was leading me that way.” When her oldest son turned ten, the spark of writing burst into full flame.

With more than 17 books to her name, Coleen knows the importance of believing in one’s self. “Find what it is you love to do – because that is your gift – and then find a way to share it.” A fan of travel, theater, and movies, Coleen recently moved back to Troy, where she intends to continue writing.

Illustrator Bio:
Having left her unversity with an illustration degree, and after fifteen years as a designer and studio manager in the UK greeting card industry, Clare, a mum to Ella (age ten) and Hope (seven), took the plunge and decided to follow her life-long dream to illustrate children's books.

So having quit her job, Clare ousted her hubby  from his beloved study, set deep in the English countryside, and promptly converted it to a rather messy studio filled with children's picture books, cats, cushions, pencils, and paint. Clare set to work carving out her new career as a children's book illustrator!

Some two short years later, Clare is joyfully collaging the contents of her imagination into the pages of children's books, and loving every moment of it.

BIG! What makes us BIG?  It is not just how tall we are.   Mastering a new grade level.  That is BIG!  I would say President Obama is BIG.  Being a President is a BIG accomplishment.   You can be BIG in your community.  Being BIG enough to set a good example for your younger siblings. This would be a BIG responsibility.   Maybe you are BIG enough to get on your bike without training wheels.  That is also a BIG accomplishment! How will you know when you are BIG? When you succeed at what you are trying to accomplish. I really liked the lesson the author teaches in this story.   I think it will make a BIG impression on children of all ages. Probably some grownups too.    It will be fun to see how many times in a day we can succeed in someway BIG.   This story teaches responsibility, to set goals for oneself and to be a good (BIG) citizen.   The illustrator depicts the story with characters and other images that tells the story in a BIG way.  The illustrations are in BIG bold colors that will peak the child's imagination.    BIG! BIG! FUN! I highly recommend this book. Disclosure:  I received a free copy of this book for from Little Pickle Press for review.   I was in no way compensated for this review.  It is my honest opinion.
