Editorial Reviews

Carolyn Phelan
On the first day of kindergarten, Nick discovers a surprising resemblance between his dad and a boy in his class: not only do they both have black hair and glasses, they are both named David. When Nick asks his mother, "Is he my dad, only little?" she's evasive, but his father blithely answers, "Oh, yes, that's me." For the rest of the picture book, Nick tries unsuccessfully to trick his father into admitting that's he's "not" little David. On Parents' Night, reassured to see both Davids in the same room at the same time, Nick turns the tables on his teasing parents with a trick of his own. Considerably less reassuring than the usual first-day-of-kindergarten fare, this offbeat picture book has a certain ambiguity that might make preschoolers uncomfortable. Slightly older children, though, will probably enjoy the story. The colorful illustrations, featuring well-drawn characters and comical situations, will have broad appeal.
