Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
Meet canine companions, Big Dog and Little Dog. Little Dog has a sweater but Big Dog does not, making him sad. He starts looking for one with Little Dog lending a paw to help. They rummage through dresser drawers and find a long-sleeved green sweater; but how is Big Dog supposed to put in on? With Little Dog tugging and Big Dog hilariously pulling, they both finally have sweaters and are warm and happy. This title, part of the “Green Light Readers” series Level 1, has simple but bold pictures, simple language with repetitive words and phrases, easy vocabulary and sight words, an uncomplicated plot using double-page spreads and uncluttered pages, and consistent font. Each page has one sentence of two to nine words. It is a good getting ready-to-read book, promoting print motivation, vocabulary and narrative skills. Simplicity rules in this series. Other titles include: Big Dog and Little Dog and Big Dog and Little Dog Getting Into Trouble. While targeted for preschool and older, it has appeal for the under-two crowd, although the durable soft cover format is not the best choice for tiny hands. A bonus section of skill building activities, including a word search, story sequencing, picture-sentence matching and a maze are included for the targeted audience. A second level of “Green Light Readers” with short sentences, creative stories and simple dialogue is available for those needing help with reading. Abundant picture clues make this is a good choice for those getting ready to read. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid; Ages 4 to 6.
