Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book opens with praise for Barry, the Saint Bernard who helped rescue many people in Switzerland, and mentions other dogs that have helped people in various ways. A brief discussion of the difference between purebred and mixed breed dogs is followed by a short history of the relationships of dogs and people. Suggestions for dealing with puppies and caring for dogs in general are offered. Inserts with unrelated trivia about dogs (not necessarily big ones) tend to detract from the information presented. The book as a whole contains a smattering of facts, but lacks a clear focus. It seems to be more about dogs in general than specifically about big dogs as the title indicates. Children will enjoy the appealing full color photographs of dogs and puppies, but will need to look in other sources if they are really interested learning about large dogs. A short glossary, bibliography and index are included. Part of the "Perfect Pets" series. 2001, Benchmark Books/Marshall Cavendish. Ages 6 to 8. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer
