Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“Broad slapstick humor and galloping, Seuss-like rhymes are just part of the reason this sequel to The Cat on the Mat Is Flat has strong child appeal. Denton's funny illustrations are full of action, and his use of stick figures and stink lines makes the book look as though it had been illustrated by a cheeky but talented kid.” —School Library Journal, starred review

“Early, emerging, reluctant, and accomplished readers alike are certain to enjoy this hilarious, easy to read book chock-full of whacky, slapstick rhyme. Perfectly complemented with zany black-and-white illustrations, kids will gobble-up these 10 short stories. . . . Full of humor, fun, and an easy format that builds reading confidence, this selection is irresistible.” —Herald Tribune (Sarasota, FL)

Gr 2–3—Broad slapstick humor and galloping, Seuss-like rhymes are just part of the reason this sequel to The Cat on the Mat Is Flat (Feiwel & Friends, 2007) has strong child appeal. Denton's funny illustrations are full of action, and his use of stick figures and stink lines makes the book look as though it had been illustrated by a cheeky but talented kid. The type layout is peppy and appropriate, breaking the story up with words that shrink or become enormous as the rhymes dictate. The 10 brief stories allow for frequent pauses but also flow together well, with some unexpected and witty transitions. A few challenging words ("underwater," "squirm") make this a book for more-competent beginning readers.—Paula Willey, Baltimore County Public Library, Towson, MD
Children's Literature - Erika Clark
This wonderful, comic-style book includes cartoons that visually express the humor and action of every word. It would be the perfect selection for students to read independently during their free time in any classroom to build interest in reading for fun. The author effectively organizes the collection of stories, although each short story sees one or more new characters being introduced. The author uses text features such as the table of contents and chapter headings to organize each story. The author also manipulates text features to better appeal to the reader. For example, the text reads: "Klaus the mouse has a very small house. A very, very, very, very, very small house. But Klaus the mouse hates his small house...because Klaus is a very, very, very big mouse." As a student tracks the words about Klaus the mouse, he or she will notice how the words increase and decrease in size, depending on the meaning and action of the story. The fun does not cease with Klaus the mouse too big for his house. Willy the worm never pays attention! He fools around so much that he always ends up in a big knot. Then there are Keith, Ed, and Daisy, who are all unique! Keith is a man who wears one coat on top and two underneath, whereas his brother Ed wears five hats on tip of his head. Their sister is known as "One-dress Daisy," and she shares her dress with her best friend. Students will be tempted to turn the pages to learn more about Griffiths' wacky characters and their unique situations. Reviewer: Erika Clark
