Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Three-time Caldecott Honor winner Mo Willems said that he thought that drawing pop-up books was hard; then he discovered that creating pop-out books was even more laborious: "We spent a long time going back and forth, rewriting, redesigning, redrawing, re-everything to get this book as good as could it be." And good it is, Big Frog Can't Fit In features an outsized hopping hero who simply can't be contained within average book formats. An ingeniously packaged production.
Children's Literature
The unusual design of this pop-up book requires special packaging for shipping. The yellow front cover is almost two inches shorter than its orange back cover; and between the two covers is a green frog foot that cannot be folded back into its page. This is intentional because the big frog is too big to fit in. The solution is an extra folded orange box to sit on top of the front cover and inside pages so the top of the book becomes manageable for handling. Within the six double page spreads of the book we learn how unhappy big frog is. If only she were smaller or more bendable, but she is not. Wait; her friends have an idea! Five of the spreads have pop-ups showing different ways of making big frog fit. In one, a pull-tab makes her shorter, next a lifted flap shows her twisted into a knot. In another she is weeping; then she lies on her back with feet in the air. On the next to last page she sits up eagerly to hear her friend's suggestions, and, on the last spread, with the sides of two pages popping up around her, she approves their suggestion of giving her a bigger book! This is a heavy bulky book in part because of the uneven covers and also because heavy paper has been used to make the large pop-ups workable. The result is a difficult book to manage and several pop-ups that need help getting back into the book. The trivial nature of the story does not justify the heft of this book. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
Sherie Posesorski
The poses (engineering by Bruce Foster) will get surefire laughs at first sight of the frog: legs out, arms up, a panicked expression. No matter what kind of help the reader provides by pulling tabs to make the frog smaller, nothing works, and the center spread of the frog desperate to leap out of her confines, unable to stand it, is a highlight of comic pathos and 3-D design.
—The New York Times
Publishers Weekly
A larger-than-life frog can’t fit into this self-proclaimed “pop out” book. “If only she were smaller,” Big Frog thinks, as a pull tab lets readers shrink her extra-long legs (turning her frown into a toothy smile); another thought bubble has her wishing to be “more bendable,” as she’s seen twisted up, Gumby-style). But with some help from friends (a crew of tiny frogs—though Pigeon also makes a cameo), Big Frog finds a solution: “Make a bigger book!” shout signs on an enormous and intricate final spread. A sunny tribute to the power of friendship to provide ingenuity, help and cheer. Ages 4–8 (Oct.)

    I Also Recommend:

    GREAT pop-up book!

This is such an amazing pop-up book because the details are so fun to look for! I teach Kindergarten and they request this book time and time again because the pop-up features are so fun for them to look at. There isn't really a plot to the story and I wish it was a little longer, but it's already such a thick book because of all the pop-ups that it can't be any bigger. As in most Mo Willems book, the Pigeon makes a surprise visit in the story and the kids went crazy for it! A FANTASTIC book for a read-aloud and a MUST-HAVE for all Mo Willems fans!

    I Also Recommend:

    Best pop-up book!

The character is engaging, and the colors and shapes exciting for young children. There are a lot of interactive tabs and pulls to involve the children in furthering the story. And, important to regular Mo Willems fans, the fun Pigeon character is hidden in the book for the kids to find. I'm an elementary librarian and my kids request rereading of this story over and over. But then, everything Mo Willems does is engaging and fun for kids.
