Big Funny

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David McGee
On BIG FUNNY, Jeff Foxworthy serves up a heaping helping of his sharp observational humor, much of it addressing the starkly divergent ways in which men and women view the world. Foxworthy offers an answer to the question "What do women want?" in "Women Want to Talk," the title of which pretty much sums up its revelation. "You Are Being Trained" offers pointed advice to unassuming husbands about what's really going between them and their wives. "Jeff Gordon Enunciates," on the other hand, goes off the beaten path of relationships to explore the singular mindset of NASCAR fans' allegiances to particular drivers. "Jeff Gordon Enunciates," on the other hand, goes off the beaten path of relationships to explore the singular mindset of NASCAR fans' allegiances to particular drivers. Foxworthy returns to familiar territory with "I'd Thought I'd Heard Every Redneck Thing," in which he recounts a story about a young man bitten in the pectorals by a beaver, which leads the comic to conclude that "This was probably the only time in history when the headline in the newspaper could include the words 'beaver' and 'nipple' and nobody would be offended." His delivery is snappy, his rhythm impeccable, his personality engaging, and his material knowing and intelligent. Oh -- and he's very funny, too. Foxworthy's on top of his game here.
All Music Guide - Steve Huey
Jeff Foxworthy's first album for DreamWorks, Big Funny, is also his first standup record not to rely heavily on redneck-themed material. Of course, Foxworthy doesn't completely abandon it, although he does seem to acknowledge that it's time to move on in the title of the bit "I Thought I'd Heard Every Redneck Thing"; there's also a hilarious, well-done impression of stock car driver Jeff Gordon, mimicking how difficult it is to understand any comments given in post-race interviews. But for the most part, Foxworthy concentrates on family life, gently and good-naturedly poking fun at gender differences in marriage and the pitfalls of child-rearing. It's subject matter that's been covered many a time, but Foxworthy's droll delivery will make Big Funny well worth the time of his fans.
