Overview

When the body of an unscrupulous land developer washes in with the tide, there are more suspects than mourners in the quirky town of Devil's Harbor, Oregon. Vince Grabowski was infamous for creating an environmental disaster, hatching shady investment schemes and trying to commercialize the tiny coastal community. A list of who-could-have-done-it includes Grabowski's less-than grieving widow, her eco-freak boyfriend, a marijuana-farming ice cream shop owner, a radio evangelist about to lose her listeners, the mayor's sex-crazed wife and a disgruntled artist who grudgingly perpetuates a hoax on gullible tourists. For Molly Donovan, the murder creates an opportunity to use the crime reporting skills she shelved when her father's heart attack forced her to return to Oregon. Chafing under the limitations of writing for The North Coast Flotsam, she revels in matching wits with investigators-until the killer frames her father.

Editorial Reviews

Amanda Capper
"The Big Grabowski is the first book I have read by the writing team of Carolyn Rose and Mike Nettleton, but it won’t be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed this laugh-out-loud who-done-it and look forward to reading more of their work."
Denise Dietz
"When real estate developer Vince Grabowski is discovered dead amidst a huddle of sea lions, small town reporter Molly Donovan tells Sergeant Erdman that he won't have to make a list of suspects. Instead, he can copy the Devil's Harbor phone book. The Big Grabowski is a whirligig of exhilaration; the kind of book that reminds us of how much fun reading mysteries should be!"

DENISE DIETZ, author of Soap Bubbles
Elizabeth Lyon
"Just when you settle into this light mystery, and let your guard down, The Big Grabowski sweeps you into a town of Oregon coastal dwellers, nearly all with motive to kill, who live on the other side of what you expect."

ELIZABETH LYON, author of A Writers Guide To Fiction

    Carolyn Rose is Awesome

I loved this book and the second one, sometimes a great commotion and both were excellent reads. She is great with witty humor and tosses a little romance in as well. But the intrigue of each story is wonderfully written and the characters vividly come to life. Both are must reads.

    Enjoyable Mystery Novel!

Book Review The Big Grabowski by Carolyn J. Rose and Mike Nettleton 2009

The novel begins with Jennifer Daley complaining that nothing ever happens in Devil's Harbor, Oregon, shortly before she discovers the body of Vince Grabowski, a shady land developer. Molly Donovan, reporter for the local newspaper, is the central focus and amateur sleuth. She has come home to take care of her ailing father, giving up her news career in New Mexico. Point of view shifts from Molly's first person to many residents and possible suspects presented in the third person. There is a lot of humor here and bouncy dialog. But guessing the murderer won't be easy, not when so many residents of Devil's Harbor had good reason to wish the big Grabowki dead, including his own wife. This is a fun mystery novel, a cross between Lillian Jackson Braun and Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express.
