Readers follow the adventures of a golden yellow lion cub from daybreak to nightfall. Grover narrates the cub’s journey in punchy couplets (“We run free./ So much to see./ Grasses sway./ I lead the way”) as he pounces after a brown bird (who doesn’t seem to mind all that much), rests under a tree with his lioness mother, and tussles with another small lion. Kightley’s paintings, if a tad generic in their nonthreatening sweetness, maintain a gentle sense of rowdy fun, and she tucks small details into each scene (a mole here, a beetle there) that invite quiet moments of seek-and-find interactivity. Ages 3–up. Author’s agent: Elizabeth Harding, Curtis Brown. (Jan.)

This sturdy board book follows the day of a lion cub and her mother. It is whimsically illustrated with a broad palette and includes a few other animals the pair encounters before evening falls. The rhymed verses are sometimes a bit strained, but will read aloud well enough to capture young listeners. Grover uses many action verbs that will provide a springboard for discussions: “stretch and yawn, stalk and pounce, duck down, sigh and smile, roar and tug, etc.” Youngsters may enjoy acting out the cub’s activities while their vocabularies are enlarged. Playing with another friendly cub allows for the opportunity to “Share and roar, they tug some more.” Pleasant scenes are not too cluttered for young eyes to focus on the animals and to spot the small insects found on each page. At day’s end, momma and cub settle down together under the bright, shinning moon. The last sentence reads, “Hug her tight, for all is right.” This will serve as a good night story that ends with a reassuring hug. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan; Ages 1 to 3.

A day-in-the-life tale of a lion cub and his mother. From morning until night, the little wild cat enjoys pouncing, playing, exploring and preening while his momma looks on and offers a helping paw when needed. The youngster encounters a fellow cub and a couple of meerkats before hunkering down with momma for the night. Each double-page spread (on thinner-than-normal board-book stock)provides a different view of thegrassland setting in both bright and muted earth tones. Kightley’s paintings, which have the look of acrylic on canvas, are deft at capturing the sunny yellow cub and his playmate in motion. This is a kinder and gentler savanna. While the little feline appears to stalk a bird under his mother’s guidance, this feathered friend does not become a meal on subsequent pages. In gentle rhyming couplets meted out in one or two couplets per page, the first-person-narrator cub describes the action: “We run free. / So much to see. / Grasses sway. / I lead the way.” As realism is not the object here, these lions are cute, cuddly and toothless, safe for sharing a crib with baby.
