Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Three funny, spirited board books by Leslie Patricelli explore opposites. In BIG Little, heads are BIG, but toes are little. Ladies are BIG but ladybugs are little. Clever pairings, bold graphic art and an expressive toddler in diapers make the concepts fun. The other titles are Quiet Loud ("Crayons are quiet. Pots and pans are LOUD") and Yummy Yucky ("Spaghetti is yummy. Worms are yucky"). (Sept.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Patricelli has a trio of board books (Big Little, Quiet Loud, and Yummy Yucky) featuring a young diapered lad with one lock spiraling up from the middle of his head. In this particular book, there are a series of comparisons between things that are large versus those that are small. "Lakes are Big. Mud puddles are little." The comparisons are items that kids would encounter such as body parts, animals, trucks and trikes, grownups and babies, boats and rubber duckies. The back two pages present even more big and little things. It is eclectic and the comparisons are not really all that logical. Not a book that will appeal to everyone. 2003, Candlewick Press, Ages 1 to 3.

Meet the Author

Leslie Patricelli lives in Seattle, Washington, with her husband, their two children, and two kitties. She sketched out her first children’s book, YUMMY YUCKY, when her then one-year-old son was putting everything in his mouth. "After hearing myself say ‘yucky!’ or ‘yummy!’ for months on end, this book seemed to write itself," she says. "Talking to and watching my young children all day gave me a voice and inspiration for these books. I write down what I say to them and what they say to me."

    Fun Book

Through fun illustrations, children learn opposites. My 7 month old loves this smiling baby and enjoys looking at every page. I would recommend this one!

    I LOVE THESE BOOKS

I am a first grade teacher as well as the mother of a 4 month old. My daughter loves these books (Big Little, Quiet Loud, Yummy Yucky). The illustrations are bright and colorful and there is just enough text - not to long - not to short. The text is repetitive and great for beginning readers. My daugher loves all of them and really looks at the pictures - she always kicks her feet and smiles when we read these books. I've been reading them everyday for a month and I'm not sick of them - they are just great books!! I recommend these books to everyone. We love them!!!!
