Children's Literature
This "Level A Rookie Reader" plows into a topic that is popular with preschoolers: construction equipment. The 24-page book opens with these lines: "A tractor pulls. A tractor plows. A tractor hauls hay for the cows." Four heavy equipment machines are described in brief, rhyming couplets. Jones' meter is impeccable, yet the beat never becomes sing-songy. Equally irresistible are Gay-Kassel's clay illustrations. A farmer pulls a cartload of children behind his balloon-tired red tractor. Cows watch placidly from behind a sausage-roll fence. The dirt shoveled into a dump truck is as thick and gooey as chocolate pudding. A red crane hoists carved-bark logs. Purple trucks, pink backhoes, and yellow pavers dig, lift, push, and scoop. The next generation of heavy equipment operators will eagerly dig into this emergent reader with bouncy text and cheerful artwork. A word list is included as back matter. 2003, Children's Press/Scholastic,
