Overview

Big Nate is big news! Big Nate books have sold more than 4.5 million copies and been on the New York Times best-seller list for more than a year.

Enjoy more than two years of Sunday cartoons, portraying the colorful life of Nate Wright. This spunky eleven-year-old holds the school record for detentions and is in little chance of losing that distinction, but that doesn't stop him from dreaming big!

He's a self-described genius, a sixth-grade renaissance man, and a full-fledged believer in his future as a cartoonist. Equipped with a No. 2 pencil and the unshakable belief that he is No. 1, Nate fights a daily battle against overzealous teachers, undercooked cafeteria food, and all-around conventionality.

Editorial Reviews

Even self-professed genius Nate Wright never imagined that he will appear in such glory. The first full-color Big Nate collects more than two years of Sunday Nate cartoons, bathing our 11-year-old polymath in a spotlight that anyone else would find embarrassingly brilliant. Fortunately, our self-willed sixth-grader harbors no such compunctions and we expect that, like his many fans, he will cherish this fun fest enthusiastically. Over the top humor for kids eight to twelve.

From the Publisher
"In addition to the graphic storytelling, Nate’s cartoons interspersed among Peirce’s panels could provide teachers and librarians with great opportunities to incorporate this series into programs or lessons on cartooning and writing." (Snow Wildsmith, Booklist)

"…if you’re looking for a new series to introduce your kids to this upcoming holiday season, chances are they’ll really like these collections." (Rich Johnston, Bleeding Cool)

"Fans of the Big Nate graphic novels will love seeing another side of their favorite character in this collection of more than two years of Sunday comics—all in full color." (Patch.com)

"Big Nate is super funny. I love these books." (Appeal-Democrat)

Children's Literature - Raina Sedore
Nate likes to make trouble. He likes to draw comics which make fun of his sister and the teacher he detests. His locker is a disaster zone. He plays tricks on his friends. He is also the protagonist of a franchise which has reached the level of a phenomenon. This volume collects more than two years of full-color, three row Sunday cartoons telling the day-to-day trials and triumphs of our rambunctious hero. Many of the pages include large portions from Nate's hand-drawn comics, completed by a final panel depicting the subject of his humor discovering his mockery. While Nate is not a particularly sympathetic character, he follows in the footsteps of Hank Ketcham's Dennis the Menace and Jeff Kinney's Greg Heffley and has built up a significant following among young readers. Although most of the plotlines of these pages are humorous, there are occasional touching scenes, such as the strip where Nate goes to a stationary store looking for a card for his father for Mother's Day. While there is a fair amount of snark in his frustration when they do not have any Mother's Day cards for dads, it is a poignant moment which rings true to the lives of children of single parents. Young readers who love Big Nate will love this entry into the franchise. Reviewer: Raina Sedore
