Overview

Aspiring cartoonist Nate Wright is the star of Big Nate. Nate is eleven years old, four-and-a-half feet tall, and the all-time record holder for detentions in school history. He's a self-described genius and sixth grade Renaissance Man. Equipped with only a #2 pencil and the unshakable belief that he is #1, Nate fights a daily battle against overzealous teachers, undercooked cafeteria food, and all-around conventionality. He's the original rebel without a clue, alternately abrasive and endearing to classmates and teachers alike. Nate blazes an unforgettable trail through the sixth grade at P.S. 38, earning straight A's in laughs along the way.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"A bonus fold-out color poster enhances this highly recommended comic collection that readers of all ages will enjoy." (Midwest Book Review: The Comix/Graphic Novel Shelf)

“In addition to the graphic storytelling, Nate’s cartoons interspersed among Peirce’s panels could provide teachers and librarians with great opportunities to incorporate this series into programs or lessons on cartooning and writing.” (Snow Wildsmith, Booklist)

“…if you’re looking for a new series to introduce your kids to this upcoming holiday season, chances are they’ll really like these collections.” (Rich Johnston, Bleeding Cool)

“Big Nate is super funny. I love these books.” (Appeal-Democrat)

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
Anyone who knows Nate Wright knows that when trouble hits the sixth grade, Nate is bound to be in the middle of it. In this book, readers are treated to Nate's comical misadventures with middle-school sports. On the basketball team, Nate is plagued by a "trash-talking" slump, and by a height problem that he tries to solve by eating more pastrami. In baseball season, he is mortified to find out that his team sponsor is "Chez Linda," a beauty parlor. Nate plays right field, but nothing much seems to happen out there—that is, nothing that has anything to do with baseball. When soccer time rolls around, Nate does not fare much better when his nemesis, Artur—a guy who is perfect even when he isn't trying—joins the team. This book is a collection of very funny cartoons about Nate's adventures in basketball, baseball, and soccer. Fans of Nate will recognize some of the cartoon's well-known characters and themes: Nate's long-suffering coach, his dreaded substitute coach, and his fear of cats. Each page contains a cartoon, usually presented in four or more panels, all in color. The cartoons are grouped together by sports categories and themes, but each one can stand on its own. For that reason, the book does not have to be read straight through. There is a full color pull-out poster at the end of the book (but beware: it is difficult to remove it without tearing it). Big Nate is a beloved comic hero, and anyone who likes the other books in the "Big Nate" series will enjoy this one. For newcomers to the "Big Nate" saga, this book provides an excellent introduction. Reviewer: Leona Illig
Kirkus Reviews
Big Nate Wright has got game! At least he thinks he does. Star of five novels, numerous collections of comics and two activity books (so far), sixth-grader and aspiring comics creator Nick shows his sportsmanship in this newest collection of newspaper funnies. The full-color strips, one to a page, are organized in three big chapters: "Swish," about basketball; "Play Ball," about Little League; and "Goal," about soccer. Within those chapters are five or six strip stories and general-topic weekend strips (which have, of course, a few more panels to set up their comedy). The strips are in chronological order within each sport and cover several seasons (especially the baseball section). In "Swish," always-small-in-stature Nate tries to "bulk up" so he can run with the big boys. He also loses his lucky socks and deals with a sudden inability to "trash talk" on the court. In "Play Ball," the team deals with the stigma of being sponsored by a beauty salon (go, Chez Linda!), suffers under drill-sergeant substitute coach John and plays a championship game--unfortunately without their star players. In "Goal," exchange student (and Nate nemesis) Artur joins the team, and the boys play through a cold snap. Nate deals with his...issues with humor, slight sarcasm and (sort of) aplomb. Fans and collectors will want 'em all. Big Nate continues to rock. (Comics collection. 6-12)
