Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Hynes-Berry
This book is not so much a children's picture book as an adult revenge against the authoritarian teachers of one's childhood. Opening with a boy sitting in a corner of a classroom with a blackboard filled with "I will not's," Bob Shea's text shows the boy playing out fantasies of power. He utters all the cliches from "Big plans" to "Let's get to business" to "Dress for success" as he picks up a mynah bird flunky who helps him take over increasingly important business and political posts, including some command over outer space. Lane Smith's signature sassy and exaggerated collages fill the oversize pages and do much to inject some humor. However, in the end, this is not a very empowering book for those children who march to different drummers or who have been humiliated in school for being divergent. Despite all his loud assertions, the boy on the end page is still stuck in disgrace in the corner. I'm not at all sure that is a message I would like to have young people be left with. Reviewer: Mary Hynes-Berry
School Library Journal

K-Gr 2- A boy sits in a corner of his empty classroom, his misdeeds recorded on the blackboard. Without a bit of remorse, he muses, "Soon, the entire world will know of my big plans." He climbs to a mountaintop and shouts: "I got big plans! Big plans, I say!" This line becomes his mantra and is repeated many times. On the way down the mountain, he meets a mynah bird who becomes his sidekick. They head into the city, where the boy runs a big company. While flying its helicopter (with the mynah as pilot), he sees the local football team losing a game. They land the helicopter midfield and score a victory. The boy appoints himself mayor of the city and then President of the United States. There's a photograph of the White House inserted in the middle of Smith's wacky drawings. Next, it's off to the moon, where he does some redecorating. When he blasts off for his trip back to Earth, he spells out the refrain using moon rocks. Now the whole world knows. The last page shows the youngster still in the classroom corner. Smith's vivacious illustrations make this a book to pore over as there are new details to notice with each reading. The format is oversize, and the text and drawings appear in a variety of sizes and shapes. A funny and far-reaching selection.-Ieva Bates, Ann Arbor District Library, MI

Kirkus Reviews
With as much emphasis as mammoth red display type can convey, a lad-plainly on a time-out, to judge from his opening-scene position in the corner of a classroom-proclaims that he has "BIG PLANS! BIG PLANS, I SAY!" Accompanied by a sycophantic mynah bird ("I'm in!"), wearing a fierce scowl and snapping orders right and left, he marches from boardroom to the moon across Smith's busy digital collages. On the way, this poster boy for unbridled ambition trumpets his intentions to take over a corporation, win a football game, oust the local mayor, demote the president to third in charge (behind the bird), order a rocket ship built and leave his message written in rocks across the face of the Moon for the entire world to read. Who's to stop him? Certainly not fans of top-volume stories and storytimes, who will happily troop along in his wake, undoubtedly hatching some BIG PLANS of their own. (Picture book. 5-9)

THE MOST FUN CHILDREN'S BOOK WE OWN!!!!

This book is hilarious. By far my favorite childrens book. The only down side is that this is not a good bedtime book. My 3 year old loves this book, it leaves him cracking up laughing every time!! Unfortunately he gets too excited then it is hard for me to calm him back down to get in sleep mode. But just for reading during the day.....AWESOME!!!
As a parent you have to have a sense of humor and be very animated while reading this book. AWESOME BOOK ... MY FAVORITE!!!!

"Big Plans" is great for adults too.

AS bedtime approaches my five year old pulls his batman cape out of the closet, hangs it over his shoulders, sifts through his books until he reaches the end and finds "BIG PLANS". He places the book on my lap, insisting this is our first book for the night.

AS I read thru the pages, Sam gets excited anticipating his role. I turn the page. Sam jumps off onto his feet yelling "I HAVE BIG PLANS".

Talk about a book I can get my son involved with. My 5 year loves when we read "Big Plans". Even after booktime, and I leave him to fall to sleep, my son is yelling down the hall to me "I HAVE BIG PLANS".

As an adult I could not help but to chuckle as I read "Big Plans" the first few times. How many adults do we know who run around acting like the little boy in this book?

Great book- engaging, entertaining for adults and children, awesome illustrations. A must have for any boy or girl at bedtime or even when you want a book to get them out of a "funk". "Big Plans" is the perfect recipe for fun, laughter and smiles. Bonus adventure- try reading this with three 5 year olds wearing super hero capes.

We can't wait for our other books by Bob Shea to arrive.
