Meet the Author

Margaret Wise Brown
Margaret Wise Brown

Few writers have been as attuned to the concerns and emotions of childhood as Margaret Wise Brown (1910-1952). A graduate of Hollins College and the progressive Bank Street College of Education, she combined her literary aspirations with the study of child development. Her unique ability to see the world through a child's eyes is unequaled. Her many classic books continue to delight thousands of young listeners and readers year after year.

Biography

When Margaret Wise Brown began to write for young children, most picture books were written by illustrators, whose training and talents lay mainly in the visual arts. Brown, the author of Goodnight Moon, was the first picture-book author to achieve recognition as a writer, and the first, according to historian Barbara Bader, "to make the writing of picture books an art."

After graduating college in 1932, Brown's first ambition was to write literature for adults; but when she entered a program for student teachers in New York, she was thrilled by the experience of working with young children, and inspired by the program's progressive leader, the education reformer Lucy Sprague Mitchell. Mitchell held that stories for very young children should be grounded in "the here and now" rather than nonsense or fantasy. For children aged two to five, she thought, real experience was magical enough without embellishments.

Few children's authors had attempted to write specifically for so young an audience, but Brown quickly proved herself gifted at the task. She was appointed editor of a new publishing firm devoted to children's books, where she cultivated promising new writers and illustrators, helped develop innovations like the board book, and became, as her biographer Leonard S. Marcus notes, "one of the central figures of a period now considered the golden age of the American picture book."

Though Brown was intensely interested in modernist writers like Gertrude Stein (whom she persuaded to write a children's book, The World Is Round), it was a medieval ballad that provided the inspiration for The Runaway Bunny (1942), illustrated by Clement Hurd. The Runaway Bunny was Brown's first departure from the here-and-now style of writing, and became one of her most popular books.

Goodnight Moon, another collaboration with Hurd, appeared in 1947. The story of a little rabbit's bedtime ritual, its rhythmic litany of familiar objects placed it somewhere between the nursery rhyme and the here-and-now story. At first it was only moderately successful, but its popularity gradually climbed, and by 2000, it was among the top 40 best-selling children's books of all time.

The postwar baby boom helped propel sales of Brown's many picture books, including Two Little Trains (1949) and The Important Book (1949). After the author died in 1952, at the age of 42, many of her unpublished manuscripts were illustrated and made into books, but Brown remains best known for Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny.

More people recognize those titles than recognize the name of their author, but Margaret Wise Brown wouldn't have minded. "It didn't seem important that anyone wrote them," she once said of the books she read as a child. "And it still doesn't seem important. I wish I didn't have ever to sign my long name on the cover of a book and I wish I could write a story that would seem absolutely true to the child who hears it and to myself." For millions of children who have settled down to hear her stories, she did just that.

Good To Know

When Goodnight Moon first appeared, the New York Public Library declined to buy it (an internal reviewer dismissed it as too sentimental). The book sold fairly well until 1953, when sales began to climb, perhaps because of word-of-mouth recommendations by parents. More than 4 million copies have now been sold. The New York Public Library finally placed its first order for the book in 1973.

If you look closely at the bookshelves illustrated in Goodnight Moon, you'll see that one of the little rabbit's books is The Runaway Bunny. One of three framed pictures on the walls shows a scene from the same book.

Brown's death was a stunning and sad surprise. The author had had an emergency appendectomy in France while on a book tour, which was successful; but when she did a can-can kick days later to demonstrate her good health to her doctor, it caused a fatal embolism.

    an early library classic

I recently purchased a copy of THE BIG RED BARN for a friend who was adopting 1 and 2 year old brothers. I remembered this book fondly as one of my son's favorite bedtime reads. The text is simple and rhyming. The story takes the reader through a day on the farm, introducing a variety of animals through charming illustrations. At the end of the book all of the animals go to bed in the barn. It's sweet how Margaret Wise Brown steadily darkens the sky so the reader can anticipate the end of the day. When my son was little, we would sing a soft, simple tune to say goodnight to each of the animals sleeping in the barn. Bonus: Since it's a boardbook, my son was able to turn the pages without me having to worry about them being torn.

    The Words Are Magical

Margaret Wise Brown had a gift for words; but mostly for putting words together in a way that makes you love to read them aloud. I bought this book when my first-born was a baby. I read it to him many times. Then I read it to his younger brother many times, then to both of them together many times. Here comes the magical part. When the boys were too old to appreciate "The Big Red Barn" I didn't dream of giving it away, as I did many of their other books they outgrew. I kept it for me and sometimes when I'm stressed or tired or scattered I grab "The Big Red Barn" and I read it aloud to myself. It's soothing and the imagery is lovely. It's a gem, to be sure.

    Down on the Farm Again

When I found The Big Red Barn and noticed it was written by Margaret Wise Brown, also the author of Goodnight Moon, I quickly added it to our collection. Goodnight Moon had stood us in good stead for over a year, and I was sure The Big Red Barn would soon be another favorite. We especially love the colorful illustrations; there is much to see on every page and you can notice new things with each reading. Sometimes we have to look very very close to see little mice! The rhyming, easy writing style makes for great animal-noise making moments. My mom grew up on a farm and we spent lots of time there as children, so the chance to expose my grandson to an environment he'll likely never know is immensely pleasing to me.

    love this book!

this is one of four that we give at baby showers. we've noticed that very few people give books at showers. this purchase was for my sister-in-law. as she began opening it, she started to cry when she realized what the gift was, because she used to read all these books to my daughter when she was small.

My 2 yr old LOVES this book.

I purchased this book for my 2 1/2 yr old daughter because she always talks about farm animals and loves Goodnight Moon by the same author. This is now her favorite book. We've read it so many times in the last month that she now recites it while sitting on the potty. Great book!!

A winner with the Whole Family

We received this as a gift for our oldest son who is know 7. We have replaced that copy twice. The pictures are wonderful and we love to look for the mouse and butterfly on different pages. The story is simple enough for little kids to follow along. Now our oldest son reads this to his brothers!!

Some nice moments, text is awkward and lacks flow. Not a favorite.

I was disappointed in this book. I purchased it without having ever read it, based on the few pages and text snippets I was able to find here and on other book sites - the few pages I read seemed to have a nice rhythm and the illustrations looked fine. I didn't have a book with farm animals for my baby, so this seemed a good, fun start -- plus, my baby (a 10-month-old) loves Goodnight Moon.

I find the text very awkward. It lacks consistent rhythm and doesn't always flow. Some of the lines are really nice, and it seems to start to flow when suddenly, there are animal noises. Part of this may be the layout of the book, as well, when lines are broken up over two pages and the sense of rhythm is lost entirely.

The best farm animal book for babies!

This book has great illustrations set on a farm. I like it better than the books that just show a picture of one animal at a time. The moon at the end was a favorite early on for my baby. This is probably her favorite book.

    Beautiful illustrations.

I love the wonderful illustrations and each picture has a lot of animals to pick out and talk about. The story does not rhyme, unlike most board books.

    I Also Recommend:

Sticks with me in the best possible way

When I first purchased this book, as part of a bundled set, the cover did not grab me so I didn't read it to my son for a while. Then I read it to him before bed one night and was taken by how perfect the rhythm is, and how the sing-song nature of it stuck with me, but only in the best possible way, sort of like a song you hear and instantly like.

We have many books, but I read it to him again and again, until I memorized the whole thing. On car trips, I would recite the whole book to my son from memory, and I am not one to memorize lines from a play nor from a poem--but I can remember song lyrics. The text is so lyrical, that it's sort of like a song, and it does not become boring when read over and over.

By the big red barn / In the great green field,
There was pink pig / Who was learning to squeal.
There was a great big horse / And a very little horse,
And on every barn / Is a weather vane, of course,
    A golden flying horse.

If I was told I could only have ten books out of the hundreds that I own, I would likely include this one. It's that delightful.

Engaging and great fun to read

My two year old daughter loves this story - we checked it out from the library first. After repeated requests to go and get "Big Red Barn" from the library, we purchased a copy for her birthday. The rhymes and images make for a delightful shared story experience, especially if your child likes animals. I would recommend this book to anyone with young children, in fact, if you don't have young children go and borrow one.

    Pleasurable for all!

My 12 month old son routinely brings this book to me and wants it read! He points to the animals in the great illustrations, and is trying to make the animal sounds. This is a great book...even for mom...engaging with beautifully done artful illustrustrations! The only thing that would make it better for my son right now is flaps so he could discover hidden items!!

    Does not rhyme on purpose

Margaret Wise Brown believed that she should not rhyme at all times because she thought the non-rhyming would cause the children to think more. My daughter loves loves loves this book.

    Kids Love It!

My son absolutely loves this book. I couldn't in good conscience give it all five stars, however, because the rhyming patterns are terrible. Sometimes they rhyme, sometimes they are a pathetic attempt, and other times it seems the author didn't even bother trying. If you just look at the pictures, though, and talk about them, it's a great learning tool!

    Still Reading 10 years later

My daughter is 10 and she still asks me to read this to her. And on every page, she still points out the butterfly just like she did when she was a toddler. It gives us special time together. It's amazing how special books last a lifetime.
