Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In Jarman's (Will There Be Polar Bears?) picture book, what starts out as a domestic comedy-two kids soak the bathroom and their dad during an especially rambunctious tub time-turns into a frothy flight of fancy. Egging each other on with cries of "I splash! You splash! Splash! Splash! Splash!," Stella and Stan certainly don't need any help spreading the wetness. But when a parade of animals shows up at the bathroom door wanting to join in, the siblings urge them one by one to climb aboard (attentive readers will note that the guests bear a striking resemblance to the children's tub toys and other animal-emblazoned belongings). The massive splashing action finally loosens the big red tub's moorings, and it sails out of the house and into outer space ("It flies twice 'round the world,/ over mountain and plain./ Till a flock of flamingos.../ ...tows it home again!" Reynolds's (Sammy and the Dinosaurs) literally and figuratively buoyant pictures make the most of the saturated silliness. His cartooned menagerie exudes an eager mischievousness, while his gleefully rendered bubbles, splashes and spills may well induce a tidal wave of preschooler giggles. Ages 3-5. (Dec.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Children are possessed of amazing imaginations. They can take the most ordinary object and create an elaborate set of events surrounding that object. When it's time for Stan and Stella to take their bath, they are soon joined by a puppy, a lion, a duck and numerous other animals. Their big red bathtub expands to hold them all, the suds expand and surround them, and the water overflows and creates a tidal wave that sweeps them right out of the door, down the stairs, and out of the house. Their tub even takes flight and flies around the world before being towed home by a flock of flamingos. They are safely back in their own house, in their own bathroom, when mom comes in and they tell her all about their adventures in their bath. The rhyming cadence and the repeating words throughout the text, combined with the colorful illustrations portraying the children and animals on their adventures in the tub, make this a very entertaining read. 2004, Orchard Books, Ages 3 to 7.

Kirkus Reviews
This flight of fancy soars above ordinary bath books. The adventure starts with "Stan and Stella in the big red tub. I splash! You splash!" But it doesn't stop there. Next to join the bubbly fun is Dog, who dives right in. In rhyming repetition, this energetic tale builds with every page: "But who's that roaring at the door?" Lion sloshes in, only to be joined by duck and turtle and many more. But not even this capacious tub can hold all the bath buddies, and when Hippopotamus joins the clean team, the tub sloshes right out of the bathroom, down the stairs and into the great outdoors. As the red tub acts more like a spaceship than a bathtub, the bathers take a trip beyond expectation. Parents and kids will have fun finding the inspiration for the fantastic visitors strewn about the bathroom. Reynolds's artwork uses bold outlines to contain sparklingly bright watercolors that enhance the character's joyful expressions and lively action. Jarman has created an imaginative tale of good clean fun! (Picture book. 2-5)
