Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lauri Berkenkamp
Roller coasters of all varieties are shown in this book, which is part of Capstone Press's "BIG" series of picture books designed to support early readers in understanding text while also supporting national science standards. Divided into three sections titled, "Big, Bigger, Biggest," the book pairs two short, descriptive sentences with four-color action shots of various types of roller coasters. The coasters presented range from traditional wooden coasters to standing coasters, single-car coasters, hanging coasters, four-dimensional coasters, and bobsled-type coasters. A short factoid about the size of each type of the roller coaster pictured is also included in the text. The book's photographs are exciting and sure to appeal to coaster lovers of all ages, and the text offers lots of simple but lively action verbs to accompany the images. However, the book lacks much information about the actual coasters featured, which somewhat takes away from the fun. The first factoid in the book provides the name and location of the roller coaster featured on that page, but all the other factoids simply give the size of the type of coaster shown with no identifying information, rendering the information irrelevant without context. Also included in the book are a glossary,a list of reading-level-appropriate related books, internet reference, and an index. Reviewer: Lauri Berkenkamp
