What a wonderful Book. I could not put it down once I started. A very sweet story about a girl (L.A.) going through a tough time in her life as her mom tells her she is going to be a big sister. As a child I had step parents and I really felt connected to L.A. as I went through her ups and downs. It was fun and creative for her to record her life with a video diary. Without giving anything away, I could not stop crying from Page 54 on so have a box of tissues near by. I am so looking forward to the next book. Two VERY BIG thumbs up!!!

In this story, you will go through a transforming journey with a young girl who has, for 9 or 10 years been an only child, and the apple of her mother¿s eye. Unexpectedly to her, she finds out that her mother, along with her new step-father and entire family are expecting a new baby! While at first she feels frustrated, confused and at times angry at the prospect of having a new sibling join the family, soon she is enlightened by what this little blessing might bring to her life. Throughout the book, she records her thoughts and feelings via her new personal video camera journal, a much appreciated gift from her grandparents. This insightful book, written with light spiritual undertones, and support from a few profound bible verses, does a wonderful job of explaining what is happening during pregnancy. It is age-appropriate for young adolescents and helpful in clarifying things in simple terms for what a child might wonder and ask about as this miracle develops. I like that the book explains things in terms of blessings without getting overly explicit into the biology of things that a young child might not yet comprehend. This book also depicts a healthy mixed family that is thankful for the ups and downs that have brought them together, and highlights the blessings of having more than two parents, as well as bonus siblings. The main character, L.A. (short for Lake Ashley) is an enthusiastic, energetic young girl that will remind you of what it¿s like to love simply and completely . . after she goes through the natural process of questioning everything that has brought her to this point! I won¿t give away what happens at the ending, but ,if I had 3 thumbs, they would all be up, but I can only offer two. And, because of my shortcoming, I will also point my big toes up for a total of 4 funny-looking appendages up!! Inexpensive, yet worth more than the cost! I can¿t wait for her next book!

Big Sister Babysitter is a fiction book based off a true story targeted at girls ages 9-12. The main character, Lake Ashley Payton (better known as L.A.) is a young, very spirited 4th grade girl who lives with her mom and step-dad John. One day L.A. finds out some news that she is not too happy about: She is going to be a big sister. The books takes a real life look into the struggles that an older (specifically only child) sibling can go through emotionally once they realize that a new baby will join the family. Big Sister Babysitter also gives some insight into a modern Christian blended family and how through their faith in God - they are able to bridge the gaps that could have possibly torn the family apart if not for their faith in Jesus. Another important character in the book is L.A.'s step-brother, Sky. Sky does not live with his dad and new family, but does visit them often enough that he and L.A. have a wonderful relationship. The beautiful thing is how their relationship is based in Christ and Sky serves as a big encouragement for L.A. during her time of emotional distress. When the baby (Caleb) is prematurely born, the family finds themselves again at a place where they need their faith in God to carry them through. With the help of the scriptures, prayer, and extended family - they not only carry through but grow stronger together. In the end, L.A. finds herself loving the baby more than she could have ever imagined and promises to "protect him" once he is home from the hospital; a stark contrast from the jealousy that she had as the journey began. Big Sister Babysitter is a wonderful and refreshing book in a genre lacking volume of relevant books for our young Christian girls today. If you have a child that is reading at a 9-12 year old level, then this book would be a great story to show how through Christ Jesus we are able to conquer all things! It is probably more suitable for a young girl, but would recommend this story to anyone who has a child struggling with the addition of a new baby to the family!
