The Big Tree Gang

Overview

"What is it with you and bugs?" he asked. "Rocks are so much better."
Keely got a serious look on her face and started to sing,

Rocks are boring, rocks are dead.
Reg has rocks in his head.

"Rocks don't do anything," she said with a sniff.
"That's why I like them," Reg said. "They don't fly away, they don't bite and they last a long ...

Editorial Reviews

Canadian Book Review Annual

Children's Literature
Without the often charming illustrations depicting the "Big Tree Gang," a reader would be hard pressed to describe the characters in this early reader, as the author provides no descriptions at all. The dialogue and lack of any descriptive setting would indicate that they are probably all human kids, but the pictures turn the characters into different species of animals. Because the author has not explained, a curious reader must search each illustration for clues as to which animal belongs to each name in the text. A careful review reveals that Reg and Keely appear as brother and sister skunks, while Burt appears to be a rat and Shawna a bunny. This disconnection between the text and illustrations contributes to the book's disjointed tone. Each chapter is written as a separate episode and often occurs in random order with no sense of how much time has passed between each story. For example, the chapter entitled "Bug Walk" is followed by a chapter called "Keely's cold," but other than the main characters, the two stories share no common elements to tie them together. There is no sense of the short stories as building upon one another, or contributing to an overall story in any way. Instead, the extremely didactic text emphasizes the lessons to be learned by playing fair, helping with chores, and confessing when one has done something wrong. Not especially well-written or illustrated, this early reader seems unexceptional. 2005, Orca Book Publishers, Ages 7 to 9.
