Tragedy has a way of putting everything into perspective, a truism that's brought into sharp relief by the Dave Matthews Band. LeRoi Moore, the group's saxophonist, died in 2008, something that shook the DMB to their core and they've responded as any working band does: by carrying on, playing gigs -- including one on the day of his passing -- and finishing the album they were recording at the time of his death, turning Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King into a tribute to their fallen comrade. All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
By saluting his spirit, DMB wind up returning to their roots, jettisoning any of the well-manicured crossover pop of Stand Up and reviving the loose-limbed jams that were their '90s specialty, a sound they've largely abandoned -- at least on record -- since 1998's Before These Crowded Streets. During that long, long decade between Before and Big Whiskey, DMB remained one of America's biggest bands even though much of those ten years found Matthews working through various existential crises -- things got too big so he pulled away from the band, turned out a dark solo record, then came back -- and his namesake band drifted along with him. Here, everything snaps back into focus: what was glossy is now clean and unvarnished; there is no avoidance of their rangy, loping rhythms or predilection for elastic solos; and these signatures -- shunned on record, not on-stage -- are embraced warmly, given muscle, and married to the dark undercurrents that have flowed throughout Matthews' new-millennium writing. Surely, Moore's early death weighs heavily here -- he is the GrooGrux King of the album's title and there are many allusions to him in lyrics -- but Matthews also ties in references to Hurricane Katrina and war, all as part of his wide-open meditations on mortality and morality. Not all of Big Whiskey is about death: there is an equal amount of love tunes, plus one of Matthews' casually vulgar sex songs, all celebrating enduring relationships, providing a counterpoint to the waves of melancholy. But what makes Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King the Dave Matthews Band's richest, and quite possibly best, album is the implicit message that all the love and loss can be felt and shared through the music, that the creation of the music itself is the reason why they're here -- and that's not just a moving tribute to LeRoi Moore, it's a reason for the band to keep moving on.
Rolling Stone - David Fricke
[Saxophonist LeRoi] Moore died early in the sessions for Big Whiskey, before the bulk of the album was made with producer Rob Cavallo in New Orleans last winter. The sudden loss hangs over this record's startling punch like one of that city's humid summer rains....Cavallo, working with DMB for the first time, has brought some of the classic-rock edge of his hit records with Green Day and My Chemical Romance to Matthews' arena-size spin on early-Seventies Traffic...Big Whiskey, though, is a lot like a New Orleans funeral parade, mourning and zest balled into big, brawny music.

Dig Whiskey & the GrooGrux King

Dave Matthews and his band always put together music that is easy to like. This album is great and holds up well alongside previous releases.

    Another great Dave album

Dave's best since Crash or Under the Table and Dreaming. Really every track on this disc is good. I particularly like the hit "Funny the Way it is" ...I also really like you and me.....Dave has always come through for me. He really blends different styles on this album really well in a very interesting way. I really love this album and you will too... Terrific Album

Ok, I'm a fan, but there is an abundance of great songs, terrific musicianship, and playful rhythm and melody. You can tell it's important to Dave Mathews.

Big Whiskey & The GrooCrux King

Some of the songs are really liked, others are still out for debate. This is different for this band we think.

    A keeper

Ok I admit it. I bought this latest for a Dave fix. I really only grabbed on to 2 or 3 songs the first listen through, but the more I listen to it the more I appreciate the style changes and thought provoking lyrics. this has become one of my all time favorite disks ever and also one of my favorite Dave disks.

    Excellent Masterpiece

I have been a DMB fan for year and this is the best collection of music I have heard from the group in a while. The emotion and message shows that Dave has found a happy place in his life. We can pretty much follow his life journeys through the DMB albums. This was also a great legacy to a member of the band we all miss. Can't wait to see what else is to come.....

This CD has rekindled my love for Dave Matthews Band!

I saw them perform on the Today Show and I had to run out right away to pick it up. Not only are they great performers, but Dave has the greatest sense of humor, I love him! Great album!

This cd was well worth the wait.In my opinion, this the best cd recorded in the studio since the release of Under The Table & Dreaming.Nothing can compare to their live shows, or cd's recorded live, but this cd comes really close.

I bought this cd upon it's release in June, and I am still listening to it every day.Dave did the artwork on the cover, and it is most definitely his best work ever. This is a most fitting tribute album to Leroi Moore.
I have to quote Dave Matthews and say"If you don't like this cd,you just don't like music"

    One of their Best

This summer, you're going to hear Dave Matthews newest, "Big Whiskey and Groogrux King," at BBQ's, the shore and most of the blasting IPODS around you. The best songs, co-written by Matthews with various band members, feature questions such as, The upbeat, "Shake Me Like a Monkey" asks, "Do you know what it is to feel the light of love inside of you?" The disturbing, "Time Bomb" asks, "When you hit the wall?"/ "Are you gonna learn how to fly?" You can take these questions out of the songs. You'll get answers from their point of view but you can also ponder these questions yourself or with others. It shows how profound Matthews and his co-writers are as songwriters. I liked DMB's previous release, 2005's "Stand Up," but that was a more somber recording. I get a high jolt of adrenaline each time I listen to their latest release. They ready to take on their audience and in turn the audience will welcome them back. The Dave Matthews Band has proven to be a band with depth and soul and now have produced one of their best releases to date.

    Not just awesome, but awesome-ass!

I've been waiting for a new record from these guys since Stand Up and now it's here! And they did not disappoint!
Every DMB album is different and this one is too, what with a Louisianna sound. All of their other songs you can groove, bounce and bob your head too but this album actually has you off your ass and dancing. The lyrics are great too, wisdom and of course those love songs make your toes curl.
Reviews have been saying that this is the band's bast work ever and I have to agree.
    Especially from LeRoi. RIP, man.
