Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Big Wolf leads a pleasurable, solitary life filled with his favorite things: morning exercises, fresh fruit, long walks in the woods, and quiet nights under his leaf blanket close to his tree. He is content with being a lone wolf until one day when he sees a blue dot approaching on the horizon. Who could it be? Could it be someone bigger, better, braver, or faster than Big Wolf? It is a very small, very blue wolf, who has the nerve to come right up to Big Wolf's tree. And to stay all day, without speaking. That night, when Big Wolf sees Little Wolf shivering, he shares a corner of his leaf blanket. The next day Big Wolf graciously allows Little Wolf to join him for morning exercises and even shares some fruit with him. Satisfied that Little Wolf is not a threat, Big Wolf sets off alone on his walk. Upon returning, however, Big Wolf is dismayed that his small friend is nowhere to be seen. Big Wolf's life is as it was before, but for the first time Big Wolf knows what it feels like to be lonely, and he is sad. As he waits, he concludes that if Little Wolf comes back, he will do more for him, be more generous, and share more. In the distance, Big Wolf sees a tiny dot, and for the first time his heart beats with joy. In the end, Little Wolf stays for good. Originally published to great acclaim in France, Nadine Brun-Cosme's sensitive story is perfectly matched with Olivier Tallec's original and emotional art. Thoughtful yet humorous, this exquisitely illustrated tale describes in simple language the pleasures to be found in overcoming one's own doubts and insecurities to reach out to a new friend. Reviewer: Keri Collins Lewis
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—Big Wolf lives alone under a tree at the top of a hill until one autumn day when Little Wolf comes along. At first he is wary of this stranger who silently joins him for exercises at the top of the tree, lunch at the base, and sleepy time against the trunk. But when Big Wolf goes for a walk and comes back to find Little Wolf gone, he realizes that "a little one, indeed a very little one, [has] taken up space in his heart. A lot of space." Big Wolf waits through a lonely winter, until one spring day a tiny dot in the distance slowly grows to become Little Wolf, returning at last, and a beautiful friendship begins. This translation has careful phrasing. Tallec's colorful illustrations play off the quiet dignity of the text, revealing emotion through the characters' stances and expressions, employing a sketchy painting style that brims with light.—Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD

Big Wolf's Big Connection With A Little Friend

Big Wolf is a loner and not so sure what to make of the little "dot" that he sees approaching his tree one day. Instead of keeping it at bay, however, Big Wolf lets the little wolf approach and, in fact, becomes quite fond of the little fella. But even Big Wolf doesn't know how fond he is of his new friend until little wolf disappears and the worry sets in. My favorite part is when Big Wolf realizes that, ". . . a little one, indeed a very little one, had taken up space in his heart. A lot of space." Do yourself a favor and check out this treasure about a pair of friends who come to realize that their differences don't really matter one little bit.
