Trump Tower's Missing Floors
Building management wants you to think that mid-Manhattan's glamorous Trump Tower is sixty-eight stories high. Most reference sources list the building as having sixty-eight stories. There is a button for the sixty-eighth floor on the elevator. Pushing that button takes you to a real floor whose apartment numbers start with sixty-eight. Yet Trump Tower doesn't have sixty-eight stories. A sharp-eyed observer on the ground can verify by patient counting that Trump Tower has only fifty-eight stories.
Donald Trump was well aware that prices of condos rise in proportion to height. Building managment fudged by having the top floors designated sixty-six through sixty-eight on the elevator. As a result, many a Manhattan building taller than Trump Tower has fewer stories that Trump Tower supposedly does. The General Motors Building a few blocks up Fifth Avenue is 705 feet high (vs. 664 for Trump Tower), but it has only fifty stories.
Of course, you can't blame Trump for the fact that his casinos are missing a floor. All casinos (and many other buildings) omit a thirteenth floor for fear that people would refuse to stay on the "unlucky" floor.Copyright © 1994 by William PoundstoneBiggest Secrets.
