How an Elite Police Task Force Tracked Down a Brutal Killer—A Riveting Behind-the-Scenes Account For twenty-five years, a series of rapes and murders by a faceless man dubbed “The Bike Path Rapist” terrorized the quiet suburbs of Buffalo, New York. His first known attacks were in the early 1980s, and his spree continued through 1994. After a twelve-year gap, in September 2006 he strangled and killed a forty-five-year-old mother on a rural bike path.

Bike Path Rapist examines the fascinating story inside the decades-long investigation—including the startling revelation that an innocent man had spent more than twenty years in jail for two of the rapes. Homicide Detective Dennis Delano worked tirelessly on behalf of this man, who was finally exonerated—thanks to DNA evidence that, coupled with stellar detective work, also led to the capture of the real killer.

    more from this reviewer

This is one of the better true crime books that I've read lately.

This is one of the better true crime books that I've read lately. This person eluded police for over 20 years. Someone else was convicted and charged for some of his crimes. When he turned to murder, the authorities formed a task force and started looking at all of the back crimes. This book tells of the ties between the crimes and what was necessary to release the person who was already convicted. How early police work helped in the case was also pretty amazing. The DNA match that they used to get closer on the criminal was interesting as well. It also appeared that the agencies that were put together to work as a task force could have cooperated much better. I did lose sleep staying up later than normal to read this book. If you read true crime, put this book on your short list.
