Bilbo's Last Song

( 6 )

Overview

Bilbo’s Last Song is considered by many to be Tolkien’s epilogue to his classic work The Lord of the Rings. As Bilbo Baggins takes his final voyage to the Undying Lands, he must say goodbye to Middle-earth. Poignant and lyrical, the song is both a longing to set forth on his ultimate journey and a tender farewell to friends left behind.
Pauline Baynes’s jewel-like illustrations lushly depict both this final voyage and scenes from The Hobbit, as...

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

"Day is ended, dim my eyes,/ but journey long before me lies./ Farwell, friends! I heard the call./ The ship's beside the stony wall./ Foam is white and waves are grey;/ beyond the sunset leads my way./ Foam is salt, the wind is free;/ I hear the rising of the Sea." From its very first verse Bilbo's Last Song resonates for many readers as J.R.R. Tolkien's gentle farewell to Middle Earth. Even children who have no familiarity yet with The Lord of the Rings will find this picture book of the song illustrated by Pauline Baines' graceful Hobbit illustrations a perfect bedtime enchantment.

From the Publisher
"A must for all fans of Tolkien’s vast, epic fantasy”–Publishers Weekly
Publishers Weekly
When it first appeared in 1990, PW called Bilbo's Last Song by J.R.R. Tolkien, illus. by Pauline Baynes, "a must for all fans of Tolkien's vast, epic fantasy." The poem, purportedly written by Bilbo Baggins (hero of The Hobbit) just before he takes ship from Middle-earth to the Undying Lands at the end of The Lord of the Rings, gives rise to Bayne's medieval-flavored paintings. "The effect is stirring, the mood elegiac and the imagery riveting," said PW. (Sept.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    Short but Sweet

It may be a short book, but it's very beautiful and poetic. And the pictures are...Wow. I have loved all of Tolkien's books, expecially The Lord of the Rings. This book is Bilbo's last poems as he goes to the Grey Haven with the Elves. I would recomend it to someone who enjoyed The Hobbit and others by Tolkien.

    Poetic, but not history...

This is a short book with lavish illustration, containing the song that Bilbo wrote before leaving Middle-Earth for the Grey Havens. It's a nice song, but this is the wrong book if you're looking for any history of Middle-Earth.

    Nice poem, bad illustrations

Elrond has blue eyeshadow. In fact, all the elves look like drag-queens. Bilbo has more rouge than a clown. Ms. Baynes' illustrations were great for the Chronicles of Narnia, but in my opinion, much to 'pretty' and childish for the the likes of Tolkien.
