Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
Bill Gates, born in 1955, lived in Seattle where he was friends with Paul Allen. They developed useful computer programs while in school. Bill left Harvard after two years and he and Paul developed software which they sold to companies. Then they created their own company, Microsoft. In 1983, Paul gave up most of his work at Microsoft because he had cancer. New products continued to be invented at Microsoft and by 1987 Bill was a billionaire. Besides computer operating systems, Microsoft also created Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Hardware products include mice, keyboards, and webcams. Xbox and Xbox 360 are popular gaming systems. Melinda worked at Microsoft and oversaw the Encarta CD-ROM encyclopedia. Bill and Melinda are married and have three children. Together they formed several foundations to tackle global health, development programs, and college scholarships. Warren Buffet doubled finances for the Gates Foundation. Colored photographs enhance the text. This is one of "A True Book About" series. There is a page of statistics, list of further resources, vocabulary, and index. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
