Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A truly great reference work should transcend education levels. Billboard has a history of producing such books. Heavily illustrated yet informative, fun to browse yet serious in attention to detail, this is another in its line of music genre-specific reference titles (see also Encyclopedia of Rock and Encyclopedia of Classical Music). Organized chronologically by era (e.g., Baroque, Classical, Romantic), the book surveys the entire history of opera through copious illustrations, synopses, recommended recording lists, timelines, and biographies. The connoisseur may not get as much use out of this as the amateur, but neither can deny the book's value as an entertaining one-stop resource. A vibrant reference work, ideal for circulating collections in large public libraries, too. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
