Overview

Billboard Top Pop Hits: 1966 reflects the best and worst trends in pop music that year, gathering mellow singles such as Gary Lewis & the Playboys' "She's Just My Style," the Association's "Cherish," the Lovin' Spoonful's "Daydream," and the Cyrkle's "Red Rubber Ball," along with novelty songs such as the T-Bones' "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)," Sgt. Barry Sadler's "Ballad of the Green Berets," and the New Vaudeville Band's "Winchester Cathedral." By comparison, the psych-pop of Donovan's "Sunshine Superman" and the Monkees' bubblegum rocker "Last Train to Clarksville" sound positively ferocious. The album is still entertaining, however, if only because of the pop highs and lows it spans.
