Chapter One

Billy Graham on Abortion

You saw me before I was born and scheduled each day of my life before I began to breathe. Every day was recorded in your book! —Psalm 139:16 TLB

* * *

The widespread acceptance of abortion is a symbol or sign of something deeper within our society that should also concern us greatly. This is the tendency today to decide moral issues or questions only on the basis of whether or not they are convenient or bring pleasure to a person.

* * *

I do not feel the church as an organization should become involved in political matters ... However, when political issues also have moral and spiritual dimensions ... we have a responsibility to speak for the truth. I believe things like abortion are morally wrong ... we have a responsibility to take a stand.

* * *

Abortion has divided our nation like no other issue in recent times ... The Bible places the highest value on human life. It is sacred and of inestimable worth to God, who created it "in His own image." The Bible recognizes the unborn as being fully human.

* * *

As Christians we have an obligation to show others what God says about living self-controlled lives and being responsible for our moral actions, as God defines them. We must never think that we can solve one moral crisis by condoning another, especially the crime of murder, for unrestrained abortion is nothing less than that.

* * *

How ironic this maudlin defense of immorality sounds in the light of its devastating legacy to the nation: millions of illegitimate births, shattered personalities, divorce, abortions, and rampant sexual diseases—some of which are incurable. God expressly forbids irresponsible sexual behavior, in order to spare us the disastrous consequences.

* * *

[Abortion] would destroy [a] precious life within [a woman], which would be wrong in God's eyes since that little life bears the image of God ... Every day I get letters from those who have had an abortion and now are riddled with guilt and depression over what they have done.

* * *

The issue [of] abortion is not whether you have a right to terminate the life of a child ... The real issue is whether or not you will insist on running your own life according to your own standards, or whether you will instead let God run your life.

Billy Graham on Addiction

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. —Proverbs 20:1 NKJV

* * *

Some of the most heart-breaking letters I receive are from people who tell how alcohol or drugs have ravaged their lives and destroyed their families.

* * *

Each generation becomes more addicted to the sedatives of life, to dull the pain of living.

* * *

The Bible condemns the use of any substance which alters or distorts our thinking (including alcohol, which was the most common drug in ancient times).

* * *

When the headlines get black and foreboding, the sale of alcohol and barbiturates rises in the country, as millions try to escape from the grim realities of [such] dangers.

* * *

Many people turn to alcohol to try to drown the [cries] and longings of the soul. Others attempt to quiet the longings of their souls in other ways. Nothing but God ever completely satisfies, because the soul is made for God.

* * *

Some years ago I was invited to be on a television talk show with one of the most famous personalities in America. Afterward she took me aside and told of the emptiness in her life. "My beauty is gone," she said, "I am getting old, I'm living on alcohol, and I have nothing to live for."

* * *

One of the most conspicuous modes of escape is alcoholism, which is now a national catastrophe.

* * *

This self-confident generation has produced more alcoholics, more drug addicts, more criminals, more wars, more broken homes, more assaults, more embezzlements, more murders, and more suicides ... it is time all of us ... begin to take stock of our failures, blunders, and costly mistakes. It is about time that we place less confidence in ourselves and more trust and faith in God.

* * *

Escapism seems to be the order of the day ... Escape with drugs or alcohol, and the bitterness of living will be blurred ... We can't escape from God.

* * *

Researchers have found that peer pressure exerted within a clique has caused every one of its members to experiment with drugs, to engage in murderous gang fights, to steal autos, and to violate the seventh commandment.

* * *

Liquor is not necessary either for health or for so-called gracious living ... It is the cause of untold sorrow, suffering, and material loss, not to mention the spiritual implications of drinking.

* * *

Drunkenness. This Greek word means overindulgence in alcohol. Alcohol may be used for medicine, but it can also become a terrible drug. The way it is used in our world is probably one of the great evils of our day. It is a self-inflicted impediment that springs from "a man taking a drink, a drink taking a drink, and drink taking the man." Distilled liquors as we have them today were unknown in Bible times.

* * *

In Houston, Texas, a man was born again in one of our meetings. He owned a liquor store. The next morning he had a sign on the front of his door saying, "Out of business."

* * *

Drinking has become one of the most serious social problems. It is basically the result of an attempt to escape from the responsibilities and realities of life.

* * *

A senator once confided to me that the greatest need in Washington was the elimination of the cocktail party. He said: "It consumes so much of our time that we don't have time for matters of state."

* * *

Volumes could be written on the problem of [drug] addiction. Millions of barbiturates are swallowed every night to help the nation sleep. Millions of tranquilizers keep us calm during the day. Millions of pep pills wake us up in the morning. The Bible warns that these flights from reality bring no lasting satisfaction.

* * *

The Greek word used in the New Testament to designate a sorcerer or a person who practiced occult magic is "pharmakeus," or one who mixed drugs and used them to induce spells ... Such practices are included in the list of "acts of the sinful nature" in Galatians 5:19–21 that God will judge.

* * *

Many people are trying to steady themselves by taking tranquilizers. Jesus is the greatest tranquilizer of all. He can straighten out your life and put you back on center.

* * *

One of the characteristics of some drugs (such as cocaine) is that they make a person feel strong and alert— when in fact the opposite is the case. Don't allow yourself to be deceived.

* * *

Among young people ... drinking is for getting drunk. And many go on to become alcoholics.

* * *

Drunkenness is not a new vice. Its ravages have always been a scourge on the human race ... Alcohol is a killer, a murderer.

* * *

Thousands are killed and injured every year by teenagers driving too fast or under the influence of drugs and drink ... others are killing [themselves] with alcohol or heroin overdoses.

* * *

In Christ alone there is deliverance from man's tortured thoughts and freedom from the sordid habits which are destroying so many people. Why does the Bible so clearly denounce drunkenness? Because it is an enemy of human life. Anything that is against a person's welfare, God is against.

* * *

Do not seek solace in alcohol. Alcohol obscures good judgment and leaves you unable to think clearly or understand what God is trying to say to you.

* * *

What began as an apparently harmless pastime has ended up as a frightening, overpowering addiction or obsession.

* * *

Some [young people] are taking pills called "heaven or hell" drugs, because you're liable to experience either one.

* * *

Drinking and other forms of body-wrecking pleasures are signs of weakness rather than manliness. It takes a better man to live a clean life—free from the stimulants, depressants, and drugs—than to be artificially [stimulated].

* * *

The cult of self has become an addiction— feeding off the ego of self-glorification. The word cult encompasses many movements and ideas, but simply put, it describes a culture of alternative beliefs, fads, and trends, and tampers with just enough truth to knock many off balance.

* * *

There is hope for the alcoholic: God is able to deliver from this as well as any other addiction.

Billy Graham on Age

Listen to Me ... Even to your old age, I am He, and even to gray hairs I will carry you! —Isaiah 46:3–4 NKJV

* * *

Old age has its compensations. More than ever I see each day as a gift from God. It is also a time to reflect back on God's goodness over the years and an opportunity to assure others that God truly is faithful to His promises.

* * *

Many people plan financially for retirement— but not spiritually and emotionally.

* * *

Old age is Satan's last chance to blow us off course.

* * *

God isn't finished with you when you retire! When we know Christ, we never retire from His service.

* * *

God wants us to work (whether at home or on the job), but that doesn't mean it's wrong to retire. The Levites (who assisted in Israel's worship) were required to retire at fifty.

* * *

Ask [God] to help you reflect Christ as you grow older, instead of turning sour or grumpy.

* * *

Life can grow sweeter and more rewarding as we grow older if we possess the presence of Christ. Sunsets are always glorious. It is Christ who adds colors, glory, and beauty to man's sunsets.

* * *

Life has its share of joys and laughter—but we also know life's road is often very rough. Temptations assail us; people disappoint us; illness and age weaken us; tragedies and sorrows ambush us; evil and injustice overpower us. Life is hard—but God is good, and heaven is real!

Billy Graham on America

Come here and listen, O nations of the earth. Let the world and everything in it hear my words. —Isaiah 34:1

* * *

America has probably been the most successful experiment in history. The American Dream was a glorious attempt. It was built on a religious foundation. Its earliest concepts came from Holy Scripture.

* * *

Just as America has grown and prospered within the framework of our Constitution, so Christianity has flourished and spread according to the laws set forth in the Bible.

* * *

We have so many battles going on in America today that we should be a people of prayer. Our government needs prayer. Our leaders need prayer. Our schools need prayer. Our youth need our prayers. Our families need our prayers.

* * *

You can put a public school and university in the middle of every block of every city in America— but you will never keep America from rotting morally by mere intellectual education.

* * *

I believe America has gone a long way down the wrong road. If we ever needed God's help, it is now.

* * *

God honored and blessed America as few nations in history. However, in recent years the nation has been moving away from its religious heritage.

* * *

America's Declaration of Independence speaks of "the pursuit of happiness," but nowhere in the Bible are we told to pursue this. Happiness is elusive, and we don't find it by seeking it.

    Review: This book is full of several quotes from Billy Graham’s sermons/books. I think this is a great book to have in hand during quiet time and would like to read on a certain subject without having to read a book. It’s quick, organized into categories which contain several of Billy Graham’s inspiring, motivating, and encouraging quotes.

    Good bathroom reader

    If you're looking for a good book to put beside the toilet this is the one. "Billy Graham in Quotes" by Franklin Graham with Donna Lee Toney is filled with inspirational one liners by Billy Graham that will touch your heart. It isn't really the type of book you would read for hours on end - thus the bathroom suggestion. As I read through this book I found myself hearing his accent on the words in my head and there was something nice about that familial ring.

    I was given this book free in exchange for an honest review.

    Absolutely Outstanding!

    This book, almost 400 pages long, delineates Billy Graham's thoughts in more than 100 categories, from Abortion to Young People. This is a book well worth reading, as Graham is articulate, biblically sound, and wise. Those three qualities make for a treasure trove of quotations. Billy Graham's quotes range from the pithy to the poetic, and the majority are exceptionally thought provoking. Billy Graham's effectiveness as a public speaker does not fade one iota when captured in print.

    In the chapter on Strength, Graham's devotion to and understanding of the Bible is captured thus: "We must learn to let the Word of God feed us and strengthen us in our faith in God its author, Christ is message, and the Holy Spirit its teacher."

    In the chapter on Preaching, Billy Graham's deep understanding of the human condition is reflected here: "When I preach-no matter where it is in the world-I can always count on five areas of human need that affect all peoples. Emptiness, loneliness, guilt, fear of death, deep-seated insecurity."

    The words of the evangelist who has almost undoubtedly shared the gospel with more people in the last 70 years than anyone else are well worth reading. If you don't already know the reason for his effectiveness, humanly speaking, you will understand when you read his words.

    This book was interesting, challenging, and thought provoking, reflective of a man of deep understanding of God and mankind. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

    Amazing Book!

    This is an amazing book! I was very excited to review it as I know that Billy Graham is a man of God and preaches the Gospel in an accurate, yet understandable, way.

    This book is broken down into categories - for instance there is information on the following: The Cross, Deception; Family; Money and War, just to name a few. The wonderful thing is that because it's Billy Graham, you can trust that his quotes are going to be Biblical and put into terms that we can fully understand.

    This is a book that I plan on using when ministering to others. How wonderful to be able to look up a subject and get wisdom and Scripture regarding a situation that a friend or myself is going through. This would also be a great book to use as a tool in prison ministry or in church counseling.

    I highly recommend this book. It's definitely going on my shelf with my Bibles and Commentaries as a book to refer to again and again.

    Billy Graham has become a household name through his selfless mission to spread God’s word around the world. This book basically collects a ton of quotes that come from Billy Graham himself. I found this book to be really inspirational. This book is the kind of book that if you need to have some insight into a certain situation that you’re going through or if you need a pick me up, this book is the first book I would pick up!

    Convicting Legacy

    Summary: Franklin Graham and Donna Lee Toney have put together a book of quotes from the famous reverend Billy Graham. The quotes are about 3-8 sentences long and are organized by topic. And there are a lot of topics (this a long list, you might want to skip ahead to the review): Abortion, Addiction, Age, America, Angels, Anger, Anxiety, the Bible, the Blood, Character, Children, Choice, Christianity, Church, Comfort, Commitment, Compromise, Conforming, Conscience, Conversion, Convictions, Creation, the Cross, Death, Deception, Decision, Satan, Disappointment, Discipleship, Discipline, Encouragement, End Times, Eternity, Evangelism, Evil, Faith, Family, Followers, Forgiveness, Glorifying God, God, God's Will, the Gospel, Grace, Greed, Grief, Happiness, the Heart, Heaven, Hell, Holiness, the Holy Spirit, Home, Hope, Human Nature, Imagination, Entertainment, Fun, Influence, Integrity, Jesus, Joy, Judgment, Knowledge, Life, Living the Christian Life, Loneliness, Love, Lust, Marriage, Money, Morals, Parents, Patience, Peace, People, Persecution, Pleasure, Prayer, Preaching, Pride, Race, Religion, Repentence, Resurrection, Right and Wrong, Salvation, Service, Sin, Society, Soul, Speech, Strength, Success, Suffering, Surrender, Temptation, Testimony, Thankfulness, Time, Truth, War, Witnessing, the Word of God, Work, the World, World Evangelism, Worry, Worship, and Young People.

    Review: The thing I like about Billy Graham is that he is both popular and convicting. Like "feel good" pastors such as Joel Osteen, he inspires (and has a HUGE following), but unlike Joel Osteen, he preaches the hard truths. He's not all about making you feel good, but he is about making you live good. I do miss the full sermons, and feel like I could get more out of full books and sermons, but a book of quotes preserves Graham's legacy. And this book of quotes contains quotes well chosen that both inspire and convict. It's a long book, so it's best read a little bit at a time or used as a reference book. But its length is what allows it to address so many important issues. There's something for everyone to relate to.

    Great Christian Reference Book

    I have spent more time perusing this masterful book than I would with most books because I found the best way to approach this book is to read a few pages and then meditate on the those quotes that really resonated with me. I will admit that I found so many of Billy Graham's quotes to be absolutely masterfully written. I remember watching in awe many of Graham's crusades over the years and this book truly brings out in written form the truly godly convictions that he stood for and exhibited in his life. I really liked the way the quotes were collected under the various topics in this book. Each quote is footnoted for anyone that is doing research on various topics. The quotations themselves are a good reference to have in any Christian library. I will use this book many times in the future as I prepare a sermon or a devotion as the information is absolutely brilliant. I have given this book a rating of 5 out of 5. Who should read this book? This book will bring the truth of God to both believers and non believers. As mentioned above in my review this book would be a great book for any Christian library as it could be used over and over again to answer questions about life from a biblical perspective. Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. EXCELLENT Gift Book full of Wisdom!

    This book is very simple a book full of quotes by the late Reverend Billy Graham. It covers everything from freedom of speech, abortion, worry, marriage, love, Salvation, the Resurrection and even preaching in general. It's an excellent compilation of his greatest thoughts and words on subjects that trouble or concern almost every Christian at some point or another.

    The team at Thomas Nelson once again outdid themselves in the beautiful cover and quality of this book. As a paperback, it is surprisingly good quality and would be a beautiful gift book for someone in your life having a tough time, or simply a fan of the Rev. Billy Graham. I plan on giving my copy to my grandfather who is a big fan of Rev. Graham and his ministry.

    I give this book 5 stars and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good book to give as a gift or as a resource for encouragement when struggling with tough decisions and times. Rev. Grahams quotes are almost all completely rooted in scripture as well, so you are sure to be encouraged emotionally as well as spiritually.

    Easily accessible depth

    Not many would ever argue the wisdom and power behind the words of Billy Graham. He has stood with dignitaries of the widest array and never wavered in his presentation of the truth of Scripture. The heart of an evangelist has never been lost on this man.

    This book is not a memoir. It is not a biography. It is a collection. It is a book for your reference shelf. It is sorted out in a way that makes it very easy to access exactly what you want each time you pick up the book. The arrangement of topics is not only a vast array; but it is easily accessible at the point when you need.

    It is not a devotional book; though one could use it as such. There is so much information for the Christian's journey beautifully arranged in this book, you could spend moments or years soaking it all in at whatever capacity you wish and need.

    As for me, this book will go on my closest shelf for easy access to a depth of knowledge you cannot easily neglect.

    Thank you booksneeze and Thomas Nelson Publishing for an opportunity to review such a great book that is both rich and easily used.

    Great words of wisdom

    As a member of the book sneeze program, I requested the book, Billy Graham in Quotes. I think that Billy Graham is an amazing man of God, and I love reading his books. This book is amazing. I love how it is broken down into sections. The book has more than one hundred topics arranged for easy reference. These topics include anything from abortion all the way to young people, with many of topics in between. This book covers more than seven decades of his ministry, drawing from both his published and personal works. This is a book that you cannot read in just one reading, it is a book to be read and referenced over and over.

    One of his quotes pertaining children: "Children do need the guidance of their parents, and we guide them more by the example we set than by any other way. We need to be firm and sane and fair and consistent-and, above all, we need to discipline in a spirit of love"

    One of his quotes pertaining prayer: "We should not pray for God to be on our side, but pray the we may be on God's side"

    This is definately a great book for anyone who loves to read Billy Graham, and for anyone who needs a reference book for many topics. It has a wealth of knowledge from a man of wisdom.

    (Disclaimer: I have received this book for free in return for my honest review. I did not get any compensation for this review. The opinion expressed is my own.)

    Faithfully Uplifting

    I would just like to start by saying that I don't usually read books on quotes, however I do enjoy Billy Graham so I decided to give this a try, and I really did enjoy it. It is so uplifting, and really gets you thinking. Plus we all love quotes, and it's amazing how from a simple quote you can gain so much wisdom. Most of us even live by quotes.
    This book is split up into topics, it covers just about everything and is Billy Grahams quotes on his take of bible verses, and what he believed. There is everything from addiction, anger, sadness, happiness, money, forgiveness, heaven, etc. PLUS all the topics are in alphabetical order so it is very easy to locate what you are searching for. And right now we are going through some difficult things and I found myself reading some of these quotes and they really were uplifting.
    My husband couldn't wait to get his hands on this book when it came in the mail. He too read it and thoroughly enjoyed it. I assume now it will become more of his book because as we speak he has it sitting on his bedside nightstand where he read some of the quotes before bed.
    I think that people of all ages can gain wisdom and faith from this book. I especially think it would come in handy for a pastor when writing sermons or a church class to study together. This book is both thought provoking, and spiritually uplifting. I would definitely recommend it to anyone, and there is a quote in here for everyone. And what's really lovely about this book is that the pressure isn't on to read it cover to cover, but you can use it in your everyday life. It would be a good book to keep on your nightstand or on a coffee table and when you have some you time pick it up and read on whatever topic you want some wisdom on. There are also some great footprints in here as well. It is all in all very truthful, and inspirational.

    DISCLAIMER: I was provided this book for free through Thomas Nelson Publishers in exchange for my unbiased review. Opinions expressed are mine alone.

    Billy Graham- must read

    Most people in America can recognize his name. Tons of people outside of America know who he is. If you are of the small percentage who doesn't, I'm about to give you a crash course. Billy Graham was a traveling evangelist who was IN LOVE with Jesus and spoke his truth everywhere he went. God spoke through him to other people and thousands came to Jesus and thousands grew in Jesus because of this man's love for God. Recently, I got a book that is full of his quotes!!! The truth just speaks out from the pages. The quotes are arranged in topics, such as: creation, God/Satan, heaven and hell, life and death, happiness, forgiveness, patience, and addictions. These are only a few of the topics that are discussed. The thing I like about this book, is that you can use it as a reference book, or as a devotional. Each topic has a bible verse included, so it would be a great way to get in the word each day. I loved this book and I hope you pick it up!

    Superb Compilation

    This is a very nice compilation of some of the most significant quotes from Billy Graham, one of the most known evangelist of modern time. His quotes are arranged in topics for easy reference, from Abortion to Young People, covering all major areas of interest, including Children, Heaven, Hell, Marriage, Money, Salvation, and many more. As is his style, Billy Graham always goes directly to the point, not hiding any truth, talking about the Gospel of the Lord as a true believer.
    Some of his quotes touched me deeply, as for example one on the Commitment section, that says "commitment means burning all bridges behind you". Also, in the Family section, "Your own family circle knows whether Christ lives in you and through you". There are hundred of similar quotes and the organization of the topics was done in a superb way.
    This book should be part of a permanent library of any serious Christian reader.

    This book was written by Franklin Graham with Donna Lee Toney and published by Thomas Nelson in 2011 and they were kind enough to send me a copy for reviewing through their Thomas Nelson Book Review Bloggers Program.

    A Wealth of Quotes!

    This book is not meant to be read in one sitting....it is a wealth of quotable quotes of Billy Graham compiled by his son, Franklin Graham. It is meant, instead, as a reference for Billy Graham's quotes that you can use in your sermons, speeches and writings. Personally I am extremely delighted with this very useful collection and am amazed at the wisdom that God has bestowed upon this evangelist. Here is a sampling of quotes that I find particularly inspiring and encouraging: On abortion: "The widespread acceptance of abortion is a symbol or sign of something deeper within our society that should also concern us greatly. This is the tendency today to decide moral issues or questions only on the basis of whether or not they are convenient or bring pleasure to a person." On the Bible: "We are not free to pick and choose the parts of the Bible we want to believe or obey. God has given us all of it, and we should be obedient to all of it." On Christianity: "Christianity is not an insurance policy against life's ills and troubles." "Becoming a Christian is the work of a moment; being a Christian is the work of a lifetime." On God: "Most of us know about God, but that is quite different from knowing God." "If God can be fully proved by the human mind, then He is no greater than the mind that proves Him." "You will never understand who you are until you understand who God is." "The will of God will never take us where the grace of God cannot sustain us."

    Billy Graham: In Quotes

    This book is a great a collection of quotes by the notable Billy Graham. They were taken from things he said everyday, his many seminars, and , of course, his amazing sermons that have helped many people in their life. He has helped many people in his lifetime, through their hard and rough times. They were collected by two people that were in his life and made an impact. The quotes included are in many categories, such as dealing with death, life, money, hardships, and so many more amazing categories that could help many different people with their problems.

    This book was very inspiring to all who have read it, including me. I was completely interested in it all the way through. I really loved how the book was set up into categories, such as Joy, Addictions, Death, etc, so if at any time the reader needs help in their life, they can turn to this book. They can go to the table of contents, find the category most connected to what they need help with, and be turned to a variety of quotes that can help them get through their problem. This book is so amazing, and I absolutely love the message brought by it. I would recommend this to everyone that is struggling in life and wants God's help getting through.

    A Treasure Chest of Billy¿s thoughts! It was at a Billy Graham C

    A Treasure Chest of Billy’s thoughts!
    It was at a Billy Graham Crusade that I as a child went forward to publicly profess my belief in Jesus Christ at a very large stadium in California. So it is a treasure to be able to have so many of his own words on so many different subjects! Of course, Billy admits all his quotes have their genesis from the Word of God—which never returns void! Do you need to hear words of encouragement for your emotions? Do you wonder about addictions, trials, sorrows, relationships and how you will live without submitting to sadness, depression or just giving up?
    “Life has its share of joys and laughter—but we also know life’s road is often very rough. Temptations assail us; people disappoint us; illness and age weaken us; tragedies and sorrows ambush us; evil and injustice overpower us. Life is hard—but God is good, and heaven is real!” Billy Graham’s life and his words are a testament to a life of obedience, abiding in Christ, and trusting His Father for the outcomes in difficult times. What a gem to have on my shelf! Billy Graham in Quotes compiles by Franklin Graham was provided by Thomas Nelson, for my review but it was a wonderful book, and I’d have loved it anyway!

    I love reading whatever books and articles concerning this man c

    I love reading whatever books and articles concerning this man called Billy Graham. There is so much to learn from this spiritual giant of a man. This book is precious to me for several reasons. First of all, I could just flip to many of his quotes at will to learn from him and his many years of experience. Secondly, I can get to keep his quotes at hand, whenever I preach or share, I could use them. Thirdly, the compilations of topics and dates of the quotes make it easier for me to find his quotes. Most importantly, I am so blessed to be able to strengthen my spiritual life with so many golden nuggets from the greatest evangelist of the 20th Century. He left a true spiritual legacy not only in his quotes but more so, his well-lived life!
