Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-Bruns and McCarthy both try to separate fact from fiction while striving to provide accurate, evenhanded treatments of two individuals whose larger-than-life public personas grew even larger after their deaths. According to the back-cover blurbs, each book contains an "account of an inspiring individual whose accomplishments have had a great impact on history." It is hard to tell just what was so inspiring about Billy the Kid-the same cover also says that Billy "spent his short life engaged in all kinds of violent and criminal acts"-but no one can deny that his short life was both colorful and interesting. Daniel Boone's life was also remarkable. He was a trailblazer, a trapper, and a land developer. The books begin with an exciting incident from the subjects' lives and then present the details in a more traditional, linear fashion. The authors provide both positive and negative aspects of the men's personalities. Overall, these well-researched books are interesting to read and would be useful for reports. Unfortunately, although there is plenty of white space and the typeface is clear and large, the books are visually unexciting. They are illustrated with black-and-white photographs, line drawings, and boring graphics. These colorful lives and lively biographies deserve better treatment.-Dona J.
