School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up A survey of some of the unexplained phenomena of human existence, Bio Amazing offers an introduction to ESP, acupuncture, fire walking, hypnosis, sleep, Human Spontaneous Combustion (HSC), Idiot Savants, near-death experiences. Each chapter covers a different concept, offering background, case studies and scientific information (undocumented) on what is currently known about the topic. In some instances the case studies are fictionalized, combining several different events or personalities; when this is done the author says so. The studies are intriguing and should catch the interest of most readers. However, readers who are expecting another Sky Above and Worlds Beyond (Atheneum, 1983), Herbst's outstanding first book, may be disappointed by the pop style and lighter, more conversational tone, which borders on the sensational. Some Newspeak terms, like ``tomorrowdata'' and ``todaynoise,'' clutter the text. There are no illustrations. While many other titles are available on some of the topics individually, this sampling brings them together nicely and does cover material that one might otherwise have to dig for, such as fire walking and HSC.
