Peace may not rule the planets, but love does steer the stars, or at least the characters, in this earnest tale of space medical rescue. Viehl (Eternity Row, etc.) presents another strong female lead, Jadaira mu T'resa, a patrol commander who switches from combat to medevac work to save refugees fleeing an interstellar war, set in the author's StarDoc universe. Working to save lives, Jadaira still finds conflicts, as her people, the aquatic 'Zangians, are culturally accustomed to abandoning their wounded rather than staying nearby where predators will gather. To honor her terran heritage, the modified, half-human Jadaira takes on the task of ferrying doctors in and patients out of dangerous situations, all while struggling with bureaucratic plots, leftover space minefields and the amorous and envious interests of both her orphaned second-in-command, Onkar, and a refugee religious leader, Rushan Amariah, of the lupine Skartesh. Love, like war, crosses species boundaries, although the most explicit scenes do stay within kind. The focus remains on the interpersonal much more than the interstellar, and the book exudes an enthusiastic na vet that forgives the occasional overly convenient asteroid belt. The strong romance elements, along with the general youth of the characters (Jadaira loses her virginity), will appeal to young adult SF fans. Agent, Robin Rue at Writers House. Born to the underwater race of `Zangians and saved from an early death by the introduction of human DNA into her body, Dair mu T'resa is a SEAL (surgically enhanced/altered life-form). As the head of a SEAL group that patrols the Pmoc Quadrant of space, Dair tries to save lives. But there are some who oppose the amphibious existence of Dair and her fellow SEALs and seek to destroy them. Viehl's (Blade Dancer) latest novel features a compassionate and intelligent heroine and lots of medical rescue scenes. A good choice for fans of medical and military sf. Dair was saved at birth by Teresa, her human stepmother, doing a radical surgical procedure that combined Terran and 'Zangian DNA. Now grown Commander Dair heads up a squadron of SEAL (surgically enhanced/altered life-form) pilots. Kevarzangia Two 'K-2' is the planet where Cherijo Grey Veil (StarDoc series) saved Dair's race from the Core plague. The 'Zangians are aquatic forms that thrive in the seas of K-2. When on land, Dair and her team uses lungs. When in the sea, they collapse the lungs and use gills. However, they cannot ever leave the sea for long. ........................... Dair and her squadron provide planetary patrol for the Pmoc Quadrant. Soon they agree to team up with medical personnel as a Bio Rescue unit. They respond to off-planet emergencies. But there is opposition in the forms of Onkar, her lieutenant who is overly Alpha Male, some council members, and a lupine alien species on land. Who knew that simply piloting a medical rescue team could cause so much trouble? ............................ ***** An awesome beginning to what could easily become a series of stories involving Dair and those around her. However, as a stand alone title, it is just as superb as this author's earlier release called 'Blade Dancer'. ............................. This novel catches the reader on page ONE and refuses to release the imagination until the last page has been turned. I simply cannot recommend this title highly enough. BRAVA! *****

Very unique, the main character is not human or human looking. Very different story. I like all of her writing so I freely admit to a bit of bias. But give this one and the next in the series a try, you won't regret it!

On the planet K-2 the native life form is aquatic/amphibian humanoids but for the most part they need to stay in the water to survive. There is a war going on in the galaxy between the Alliance and the Hsktst in which a brave group of natives have become SEALS (surgically enhanced/ altered life forms); their mission is to patrol their quadrant of the galaxy to make sure the Hsktst don¿t return or give warning if they do................................. Different species of colonists live on land, the majority of which are a cult of the Skartesh whose world was destroyed by the Hskskt. Leading the Skartesh is Shan who is looked upon as a messiah by his people because they believe a sacrifice on his part will restore their home world. Dair, the half native - half human leader of the SEALS, risks her life to find thousands of Skartesh that have vanished but uncovers a conspiracy that targets a take over of all the inhabited worlds in her sector.............................. S.L. Viehl is a terrific world builder who takes the mermaid legend and integrates it into a very serious space opera. The heroine, different since birth due to the surgeries and the human DNA in her system, is a natural leader and though people follow her into battle, xenophobics fear her and the colonists look upon her as someone who doesn¿t belong. She has the strength of mind to ignore their prejudices and save their lives when an enemy threatens them and in doing so finds that she belongs wherever she chooses to be. BIO RESCUE is another great work by a gifted writer................................ Harriet Klausner
